MISSION, S.D. - A mountain lion that was chased up a tree by dogs was shot and killed by tribal wildlife officials in the Mission city limits Saturday morning.
Mission is on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.
"We had the option of tranquilizing it, but we couldn't get a person with the credentials to do it. So we opted to harvest it because it was in a residential area," said Chance Wooden Knife, the director of the tribe's Department of Game, Fish and Parks.
He said it was a young male.
Officials with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks say mountain lions that are showing up outside the Black Hills usually are young ones that are forced out of the hills by older cats to protect their territory.
Wooden Knife said there are occasional reports of mountain lion sightings in the area, but none has been confirmed before this.
"Our department doesn't have a mountain lion policy. After this I guess we'll have to reorganize and get one," he said.
