I've had the cows on about 160 acres of a rye/wheat mix divided up into 4 cells since about March 1st. They've been calving like crazy now for the last several weeks. About a week ago, I took them out of the rye/wheat rotation and put them out on about 100 acres of dry grass to let the rye catch back up. Here are a few photos showing that process.

Going through the "foyer". This is the centrally located are that has the water in it.

The grass really is greener on this side of the fence

movin' on, my rye is all but done...heading out. How long does your rye last? I've never had much luck with wheat, so I plant ryegrass with the rye. Love that rye December thru February!!! :D

You are so green!!!!! I am so jealous!!!!!!!! All I see when I look out my window is white. Oh, btw, the last picture (in my opinion, anyways :-) ) would look a whole lot prettier if the cows were red.

I second every word of Shellys :D

Now keep in mind, ladies, that when it's 105 in the shade and 80% humidity down here, I will gladly consider a trade!!

It's been green for about 40 days now. It is great this time of year, but I dread the dog days of summer.

Red? Red? What do you mean red? I've got about 10 red cows out there. I like them just as much as I like the black cows. I have a couple of bulls that have just a touch of Simmental in them and have gotten some striking red blaze faced calves out of black cows this year. I'll try to get some pictures of them.

RobertMac, I probably have about another month left on the rye/wheat. After that the crabgrass and bermuda will take over. I planted some triticale this year and was bitterly disappointed. Anybody else have any experience with triticale?

PureCountry....I had triticale no-tilled into a crabgrass field in very sandy soil. It went in about September 25th and all the conditions were right. 7 months later and I have gotten very little grazing out of it. I've actually gotten as much grazing out of the volunteer "stuff" that is coming up than I have from the triticale. It was a very big disappointment that wasn't just real cheap.

Should I have tilled the ground first? Where did I go wrong?

I would sure like somebody to explain all that green stuff that the cows were eating? What is it? Is it palatable? Do cows like green grass? I was just wonderin' cause all our grass is brown or yellow. Sometimes a little of the green variety comes along a creek bank, but it's rare. Pretty pictures and nice cattle and GRASS!

movin' on, if you planted the same as your rye/wheat, you should have gotten similar resulting stands. I've been interested in triticale as a substitute for rye...my problem with rye is that it can't take saturated soils(not much of a problem the last couple of years)...I was hoping that the influence of the wheat would help it to be more tolerant of wet soils and still give the growth at cold temperatures.
