We've been pretty lucky this spring. The mustangs have bunched up for the most part and the Cowboys have turned some of the water off. The mustangs have to stay around where the balance of the water is, and that means it makes it easier for us to track them down.

While driving down the road, we were lucky enough to see a couple of white spots that didn't quite look right, so we stopped to glass them. With the glasses the whole hillside came alive with horses. It was interesting that they was only a quarter mile from where they were three weeks ago.

We circled back around them and when we came over the ridge to where we could see them, they were headed down a canyon toward water. We were able to get ahead of them without spooking them. On the bottom end of the canyon we waited for them to come over the ridge.

They strung out, climbing high around the ridge. "Quite a sight."

This was the first look I got at the new colt that cost me the milk shake.

For anyone interested,,, This is the paint mares first colt.

The paint mares second colt.

The paint mares third colt.

The paint mares fourth colt.

The paint mares fifth colt, along with the fourth. He sure looks big compared to the mare, for being just a year old.

Whats the chance that both of these too colts are out of the same dad ?

Though the BM brand is on her left hip, designating she has been given the birth control shot, she blessed the world with a new colt this year. Even though it cost me a milkshake, I will be more than thrilled if she has another one next spring. (A possibility if she can evade the BLM for another year)

Outstanding photographs!!!!!! I can hardly wait to show these to my employees. That these horses live wild and are not allowed to be pursued by anyone will amaze them.

BTW, that second paint colt is a real beauty.....mom too.

Thanks for the photos!

Great pics. The horses are looking pretty nice. :D

I must have missed the milkshake story. :?

Because the mare has a "birth control brand" on her hip,, I bet Earl, my friend, that she wouldn't have a colt this spring. I told him I wasn't going to pay up, until I had "photographic proof" of the new addition. I guess I can't ignore the obvious any longer. (I'm kind-a glad the BLM messed that up too)

Just so I've got this straight, the average citizen can't harrass the mustangs but the BLM can rope, brand, and sterilize them?

And run them fifteen to twenty miles with a helicopter to a trap. But we must remember,,, the BLM is run by that bunch of fools in Washington DC.

Is this the mare that lost her colt?? And yes we are very interested in the history... :D :D

The buckskin and the Old Mare's second colt,, are both missing colts born this spring. The buckskin herself, is on the AWOL list. (They do that on purpose,, just to make me fret about where they are.)

The old mare's first colt with her second colt.

The old mare's second colt with her first colt.

Those are good pics. Tell us about your photography equipment.

After a lot of heartburn, I finally bit the bullet and paid the price for a good camera. Really good photographers would laugh at that comment, but it's a fair outfit. Its a Nikon D40X with an 18X200 Nikkor lense. I sometimes wish I had gone with a 300mm lens, but for most shots the 200 does a good job. As for as the body,, I won't live long enough to learn how to run all of the settings. I just recently figured out how to turn it on. My next investment will be an "aftermarket set of legs and feet." Those miles of hiking are killing me.

  :D

OK. For instance on those last two pictures of the mares and their colts. How far away were they when you shot? I woudn't want much more horse in the picture because the terrain is neat............

I know very little about cameras, so this advise is worth about what you pay for it.
It's been a long time, but I'm guessing from 75 to 125 feet. The great thing about that 18X200 Zoom lens is that I am able to adjust the subject size to fill up the camera frame, depending on how far it is from the camera. Of course that only works out to a point. On longer shots even the 200mm wont bring the subject in far enough to fill the frame. The disadvantage is the bulkiness of the bigger lens. I get really tired of lugging it around. I even went and bought a "pocket size" point and shoot about a month ago, but the quality of the pictures are poor and I couldn't find one with a view finder,,, consequently I can only guess if I have the subject in the picture when I punch the button, in bright sunlight.

For not knowing much about cameras, you sure capture some quality images.
