For those of you that may or may not know, I am graduating next year. I am selling what is left of my cattle and am hoping to get into grain farming. I have a job at the local feedmill, and will still be working 6-7 hour days during school. Here's the scenario.
I have an opportunity to rent some good land around our place starting next spring. we already have the equipment as we have 5000+ acres already. Assuming that I would have the $1800 rent, what would my input be? Now, I have been looking into planting mustard. From what I have heard the input costs are low and the market is typically high. Approx. what would my input cost be, would it pay off, and what would I have to do differently then with another crop.
The last four years it has been oats, flax, peas, and now wheat. Would there be enough nitrogen left in the soil from the peas or would I have to use liquid nitrogen? Any fertilizer that I should or should not use? Our air drill is set up for liquid and Anhydrous, btw.
If you could give me any input or share past experiences, it would be appreciated. Thanks.
