Well, I got my first whitetail buck on my own, and I am very proud!

I knew where there were a few bucks, in a big bush along a hay field. Dad, my brother, and I, were going to try and rattle one out of there in the morning. When we got out to my spot, there were already four trucks parked. Frusterated and cursing, I walked off in a huff, with Dad trying to calm me down. Sheldon (brother) was having a riot. We decided to sit along a fence line in case the pushed the bush and he came along the fenceline. We didn't need to get permission, we owned both of the quarters. Sitting in a row, we watched... and waited... and waited. Finally, my buck came out. Dad started shaking. He said "Alex, he's huge, like 160, 165! I'm just filling my pants here because I have first shot. I watch him and he runs, right out in front of me. I guess 150 yards and line up my shot. CARACK! The Federal 150gr. .30-06 shell goes through his heart, and lungs, he was dead on his feet. I knew he was, he had to be, yet he kept running. Dad shot, thinking he was getting away. I didn't want him to go any farther, I squeezed off another shot. He dropped. We shook hands and walked up to him. My last shot had been high and too much lead, I shot the jaw off. dad's just skimmed the back, it went through the hide but no blood... No wasted meat there! lol.

When we got up to him, there was some ground shrinkage. Actually, that would be lying. there was ALOT of ground shrinkage. 40 Inches worth. lol.

There I am in the field with him.

Dad got his buck just before last light. We were doing some spot and stalk and found him attending to his does. One shot with his .308 Win. did the trick. It is a basic 4x4 with a short drop tine, only about an inch and a half long. Mine is also a four bu four. I couldn't get a good field pic, just when he was loading it up I got a quick one... he doesn't like pictures.

For the area that we were hunting, these were outstanding bucks. There is alot of hunting pressure here and most of the deer went either north or south a fair ways.

Happy hunting!

3 shots at another deer. I can't believe you try to bow and arrow hunt, it would be a scene from Braveheart. Blacken the sky with arrows. You should spend less time in the field and more time at the rifle range. I understand that you say you "heart and lung" shot the deer, if this was the case the 2nd and 3rd shots were unnecessary. Heart and lung shot deer do not go far. At least you keep the bullet makers happy with your piss poor hunting.

Let's see some pictures of your deer , Work hard.
One shot kills are ideal but adrenalin does take over and hurried shots are taken. Lets see your trophy room. :x

:) Great you and dad got your deer.Maybe you need to hold back on some of the explanation of the shoot.Theres bunny huggers everywhere and they're reading and not liking this stuff.

WHSH, we weren't 100% sure if it was a heart and lung shot. What if it wasn't? Then you would be griping about not taking it down cleanly. Oh, FYI, I don't try to bowhunt. I do bowhunt. When I shot my mulie buck with my bow, had one arrow. You know, the number between 0 and 2.

If this is p*** poor hunting, how do you hunt? Let's see some pictures? Maybe when your elders tell you the words, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all", you should listen to them. As far as keeping the bullet makers happy, I sure do, I buy a case (10 boxes) every month and a half or two months. I like shooting, and for this rifle season, I used four shells on deer and a box on coyotes and the such.

Mrs. Greg, I am not trying to offend them, but this is the story of the first buck I shot, killed, skinned, and gutted, on my own, and I am proud. I listen to what they have to say, and it won't kill them to skip a few words. Again, I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I was just telling my story, it keeps playing through my head.

Thanks for the kind words, and we'll try to get Sheldon his this week some time. :D

WHSH is always so condescending to ACS. My gosh he needs to grow up. I wonder if he always picks on kids or just ones that can't reach him to give him a knuckle sandwich.

ACS is shooting those big Saskatchewan hawgs-not those teenies weenies they have down south. Seen some dead on their feet deer turn into long hard tracking jobs-any good hunter makes sure they are dead and down. a big whitetail buck is a tough critter to put down at times-makes a moose look like a baby. That buck is about the size of my first-i dropped hium with one shot-it was far more luck then skill I caught him crossing a trail at about ten yards. That is a pretty severe case of ground shrink I must admit lol.

the 6th place state record was shot in my area this year. (25 pointer, 26 inch spread) took two shots in the heart to knock him down. deer are different then humans. what does it matter how many times he shot anyway?? he got the deer, good for him!

dont listen to WHSH, ACS. you know what he's up to.
