Well, I got my first whitetail buck on my own, and I am very proud!
I knew where there were a few bucks, in a big bush along a hay field. Dad, my brother, and I, were going to try and rattle one out of there in the morning. When we got out to my spot, there were already four trucks parked. Frusterated and cursing, I walked off in a huff, with Dad trying to calm me down. Sheldon (brother) was having a riot. We decided to sit along a fence line in case the pushed the bush and he came along the fenceline. We didn't need to get permission, we owned both of the quarters. Sitting in a row, we watched... and waited... and waited. Finally, my buck came out. Dad started shaking. He said "Alex, he's huge, like 160, 165! I'm just filling my pants here because I have first shot. I watch him and he runs, right out in front of me. I guess 150 yards and line up my shot. CARACK! The Federal 150gr. .30-06 shell goes through his heart, and lungs, he was dead on his feet. I knew he was, he had to be, yet he kept running. Dad shot, thinking he was getting away. I didn't want him to go any farther, I squeezed off another shot. He dropped. We shook hands and walked up to him. My last shot had been high and too much lead, I shot the jaw off. dad's just skimmed the back, it went through the hide but no blood... No wasted meat there! lol.
When we got up to him, there was some ground shrinkage. Actually, that would be lying. there was ALOT of ground shrinkage. 40 Inches worth. lol.
There I am in the field with him.
Dad got his buck just before last light. We were doing some spot and stalk and found him attending to his does. One shot with his .308 Win. did the trick. It is a basic 4x4 with a short drop tine, only about an inch and a half long. Mine is also a four bu four. I couldn't get a good field pic, just when he was loading it up I got a quick one... he doesn't like pictures.
For the area that we were hunting, these were outstanding bucks. There is alot of hunting pressure here and most of the deer went either north or south a fair ways.
Happy hunting!
