My journal entry for Friday, July 26, 1968
I crawled out at 6:30. Mom fixed up the usual breakfast of pancakes, bacon, and eggs.
The day was foggy and cool, but Dad told me to start mowing right away. I took the four-wheeler [pickup] out to the hay field and gassed the tractor, greased the mower, checked the oil and water, changed sickles, tightened the wheel bolts, etc. Then I finished mowing one land and a stack yard, and then laid out another land in the east part of the meadow.
The stacking crew put up three stacks before dinner. We came home, had dinner, and then enjoyed a longer-than-usual noon hour.
In the afternoon, I resumed mowing. About halfway through the east land, a brace broke, and a bolt broke off inside the tractor. I went over to where the rest of the gang was stacking, and swept hay while Dad welded the brace. Then I raked scatterings for a while.
Mom brought out iced tea. She, Sandra, and Nancy Jean had been to town and to the bookmobile.
I laid out a row of windrows for Sandra to follow, and then Dad and I went over to fix the mower. This didn't take too long. Then I started mowing again. They got up six more stacks before quitting time.
I finished mowing the home meadow today, not quitting until about 8:30. Then I mowed a few thistles in the south pasture on the way home.
I read for quite a while, and then the girls made root beer floats.
