My journal entry for Sunday, September 22, 1968

Uncle Stan called over bright and early, and wanted to know if any of us wanted to go to Frank Troxell's sale at Nemo, South Dakota. I volunteered, so got ready to go.

Dad took me to town. I crawled in with Uncle Stan and Ken, and we went out to the JL Ranch to get John and Uncle Joy. We took a short cut to Rapid City and arrived at Nemo about 10:30. Uncle Joy bought us pop and pie at the Branding Iron Café, and then the auction started. It was an antique collector's paradise, but we couldn't buy too much stuff because we had no way of hauling much home. [Our transportation was the 1958 Oldsmobile car that Uncle Stan inherited when Grandpa Jack died in late 1966.] I bid on quite a few things including a cow hide, a tarp, an old sidesaddle, a sheepherder's stove, a gas camp stove, and a single driving harness. All I ended up buying was a fold-up camp stove that is an antique, and a campfire toaster. The two items cost me $1.75.

Uncle Stan got some elk horns, a grab-bag bucket, and some other stuff. Ken got a one-man tent and some glassware. John and Uncle Joy were smart and saved their money.

We ate supper at Griff's Hamburger Joint in Rapid City, and got back to Merriman by 10:00.

I stayed all night at Grandma's and didn't have any trouble falling asleep. It was kind of a fun day. Troxells, who sold out their 4T Guest Ranch, had a pretty good sale. They are going to retire in Arizona and their son Buck is going to have a cattle ranch in Oregon.

It sounds like you had a great day! Wow, a day filled with pie, pop, and a hamburger, all of the things I love! :) Those were the days...
