My journal entry for Wednesday, September 4, 1968

I beat my usual waking time, and managed to pile out at 4:30 a.m. Then I grained my horse before breakfast.

Mom also arose early and had breakfast waiting. It frosted last night, so the morning was cool. I saddled Sassy and headed for my second day of school. The trip to Merriman is over seven miles, with ten wire gates, two wooden bridges, a railroad, a highway, and a creek to ford, horses to go through, dogs barking, and in general I kind of had a rough time of it. I made the trip in an hour and fifteen minutes and left my horse in Mike Davis' corral for the day.

I talked too long at Grandma's and was the last one to board the bus. In school, the morning went a little better than yesterday. I even kept from going into the wrong room. We had a short assignment in Algebra II, and then I wrote my family history in study hall. English and Ag "went by" okay. We ate our lunches in the gym and spent the noon hour outside.

I was the first to give my History report. The rest of the afternoon was spent studying.

Louie was "Johnnie on the spot" with the bus. We came back to Merriman. I saddled Sassy and headed home in a rain, having a wet ride for the first three miles or so. I had my slicker on, however.

Uncle Stan's brought Mom home from Rushville, where she took the car to get fixed. They came out for supper, celebrating Uncle Stan's and Aunt Joy's 19th wedding anniversary, and Aunt Joy's birthday.

I'm about half tired tonight.
