My Roman numerals are getting away from me here. Well, just learned over on the Cattle Today boards that my good friend and patron Tom Hook passed away on the 8th of February due to a stroke. He purchased a few pairs last summer that I had bought open from Kit Pharo a couple falls back. On the first of this month we were talking about how the cows and calves were doing, what I had going on with 4-H, and also the school curriculum he introduced my family to. Tom was something of a pastor and evangelical. Aside from your religious beliefs, he was strong in the faith, and I value what he passed on to me in faith more than all the money or help he gave me that has helped me secure a brighter future. I will miss him, but only for a short while. It certainly inspires one to turn to the work at hand so I can have something to talk with him about when I'm at the family reunion across the river. Aside from this sobering news, life is pretty good here at MYT head quarters, AKA my Mac computer. I'm back to hand written school thanks to Tom, so my computer time is less, and my time horse back and out with the tractors and cattle is greater. I have been pretty involved with 4-H here lately. Lots of conferences, judging and quiz bowl are starting up again, and I have some flat good calves this year. Hopefully our county steer show is in the bag. I'll get a photo of Tubby when I get a chance. I'm working on putting some miles a really nice 5 yr old grey filly that's gonna be a dream if she turns out. As of today, I will find out if I landed a job with Anderson Meat Co. for the summer. I'm still fixing on tractors, and working on a D14 A-C as a project this spring/summer/fall. Most of my commercial cattle are lined up to get liquidated this summer. I'm holding on to a couple registered cows and 3 yearlings, one of which is a good bull. When (if) prices straighten out I'll be in line to buy. Unless any of you want to help out a poor kid addicted to agriculture by selling me some good cows. I pay in cash.
As a final note, I have broken ground for the CSU agronomy project I'm working on this summer. I'm testing production levels of spring grains and subsequent summer annual forages planted into different types of grain stubble to see if advantages lie in certain crop rotations. Busy busy, but happy as a lark. Oh, and there is a palomino filly that has recently made her way into my life. Waiting to see how that goes.
