Where I Am
My goodness, feels like I ain't been here for a while, but I sure haven't been doing too hot on updates. Welp, I figgered to just drop in for a minute or two and make a post. Life has been very good, and thus far the sophomore year is going well. I am driving a bit more nowadays and I made the 5 hour round trip to Greeley with grandma to pick up some grass seed. This year was my first year planting a crop, and did I ever have fun doing it. Got so darn busy that I didn't get any pictures with us plowing, but Dad got a shot of the Super M and the JD seed drill. I drilled a whopping 2.5 acres of winter wheat and about 1 or 1.5 acres of dryland grass mix. But I loved it. Also, I kinda included some pictures from the entire year. Judging camp, State Conference, Iowa family reunion, cows, etc. I did my best to resize it all so that it loads in a timely manner, but I included many. Hope you enjoy.

Keep yer iron in the fire. MYT

The 2009 El Paso County judging team at state conference. The gentleman and lady sitting are my judging coach and his wife. I'm in the cap and the other 4 are teammates.

Mom and Dad also came to state conference for the awards ceremony.

Colorado had grass this year. Try and find the newborn calf!

Couple more grass shots. Hopefully, that new grass mix I bought will turn out similar, but with more wheat and rye grass.

Well, this year I started my own A.I. business. In fact, just now shipping out the last cows I was breeding on this year. So, I made a trip or two to Rocky Mountain Sire Services. Great people, and I loved the experience.

LimBull.jpg

Of course, we still rely on bull power, and this is the first bull I have ever owned. 50% belongs to me. I hope I got the half that breeds cows!

Next are some shots of our annual family reunion in northern Iowa. We're spitting distance (with the right wind) from the Mississippi River, and I hope to one day make the farm my home.

LoadinNewGator.jpg

Plenty of wood to spare, so the aunt and uncle from Nebraska took home some to burn. Uncle Mike is showing off the power of his new JD diesel gator.

PlayingwithSkidder.jpg

That wasn't enough, so their daughter and her husband hauled home a good sized load of red elm. Uncle Mel owns a log skidder, so we played with that a little.

SkidderinFire.jpg

With my dad having 7 other siblings, I have a lot of uncles! Uncle Paul couldn't resist piling some wood on our bonfire.

HarvestoreShot.jpg

Harvestore from our farm's dairy cow days. 80 feet is perty dang high.

CadeonSilo.jpg

Of course, I had to get on top and take some cellular pictures! When I figure out how to get them off my phone and on to ranchers, I will!

CadeonScrambler.jpg

No 4-wheeler at home, so I used another one. We own a good bit of timber back there, and I had some fun powering over some dirt trails.

SpreadinManure.jpg

Spreading manure on next year's garden plot.

SMFront.jpg

Planting in style with my boss's Super M. Heck, even have power steering.

SMinAction.jpg

And, for the grand finale, the Super M chugging away planting nest year's grass crop. We only reseeding a really bad spot of Spotted Napweed to see how this goes. If it works well, we'll do more next fall. Also, are there any good Napweed sprays? we heard 24D might not knock it out. Anyhow, hope you enjoyed it.

Thanks for the tour! :D You've been busy. Hope you never lose your enthusiasm and smile. Keep checkin' in so we can keep tabs on ya. We'll never be able to keep up with ya!

Looks like you had a great summer. I was just at RMSS yesterday. When you own 50% of a bull it's best to let your partner have the front half, that way they have to feed it.

Exactly my thoughts! Thanks guys. I'll be sure to check in a little more often then I have been. Welp, another day of school, chores, etc awaits me, so I better get in bed.

Looks like a fun and productive summer. Knapweed is a pain. I've read that each plant produces 1000 seeds and the seeds can stay viable in the soil for more than 5 years. So spraying will kill or control the growing plants to prevent new seed but there will still be a seed bank there, waiting for the right conditions to germinate. Spraying 2-4-D by it's self is often problematic, it will take more than one application for successive years for good control. Using a combination of products has better results; like the herbicide mixture clopyralid + 2,4-D (Curtail) applied at bud stage and then repeated the following spring to control any seedlings.

Locate your area's CSU Extension Agent and pick his/her brain, you can probably find their E-mail address on the net. Also, remember to ask about residuals and waiting periods before you could safely graze or hay the treated field.

Farming & Ranching requires the patience of Job.

Looks like everything is going your way, MYT Farms. It is nice to see the enthusiasm of youth. If all that you touch has the lasting impact of the word game you put up on "Everything Else," you will go far. :-)

Soapweed did you see how those Nebraskans were loading wood-is that so you don't have as much to unload. Myt is going to be a mover and a shaker I'm sure.

Thanks Triangle Bar! I actually did a little researching on the net and found Curtail. It says it should also help with our thistle problems. But, I'll hook up with our extension guy and figure something out. Again, thanks to all for the encouragement.

Cade-

Thanks for the pictures. Good looking cattle! It puts some people to the stories you told us when you were here at the house recently! It was nice to see your family, and meet your Dad, even if it is on the Internet! Say "hello" to your Mom for Ruthie and me, and we hope to see you again soon.

DOC HARRIS

Thanks DOC! I forgot to mention (how could I?!?!) that my mom and I net DOC and his wife this summer. Really cool guy. FH, again, thanks. I really love agriculture in general. Anything that I'll be doing in the future will center around that passion.

Northeast Iowa is some pretty country. I'm from there too and miss the hills and trees.
