Need lots of prayers

Help Support Ranchers.net:

Well we know now what's up with his kidneys. Apparently some of the medications they've been giving him to control the IPC pressures all this time, are known to do damage to the kidneys. So basically if they don't improve any on their own, he'll be on dialysis(sp) and put on a waiting list for a kidney donor in the future. That was the kidney specialists verdict this afternoon.

Well....kidneys are functioning some better. They did an MRI Monday, and he has either brain stem damage or it's really bruised. Basically the area controls conciousness, and we don't know if he'll ever regain conciousness because of that. They've been saying the last several days that he has pneumonia, well today, they discovered that when he puked on his nurse a week or so ago...some of it ended up in his lungs. Now he's not only got the pnuemonia, he's got an ecoli infection as well. That's something that's very serious, and they don't know that they can get him over that. The reason he got sick was because they pumped too much 'liquid feed' into his stomach and then they had to put a drain in his side to drain the extra out. Uhgggggg......if it aint one thing it's another. Ya'll keep up your prayers. It's in God's hands.
Before todays update they'd been talking about moving him to a full care facility, until he regained conciousness, then on to a physical therapy place. But now all that's on hold.

BIL, amazingly enough this morning they told them that if they could get transport, they'd move him to the NeuroRehab Center of Austin. Well the call came sometime this afternoon, and his wife followed the ambulance in her car. The drivers took her cell phone number and watched to make sure she was behind them at all times. But got the number just in case they got seperated, because she had no idea where the place is in Austin, and doesn't know the city. They made it just fine, sometime around 7pm tonight. She'll stay there with him thru the weekend, until he's all settled in.
This place sounds like it's an amazing bunch of folks. They specialize in Brain Injury patients, and are known world wide. They have equipment that they can start rehab even tho he hasn't regained conciousness yet. He'll have morning and afternoon "workouts" that last 3 hours. They say that instead of just layin there not really resting, these exercises really make the mind think, and the body tired, so he'll sleep in between and afterwards. Real sleep....which is real rest for the body and mind. They also have a bed that stands the patient almost all the way up. Which they say, will also help in the regaining conciousness process, along with drugs that will aid in it too. We are perdy excited that he was accepted into their program. They only accept certain cases. And after reviewing his medical records, they decided that he was a good candidate for their treatments. Also...they are one of the very few facilities that insurance will cover.
So keep the prayers coming. He's coming along fairly well, after having kidney trouble, phneumonia, ecoli infection in his lungs, and liver trouble. All that's cleared up now, so he's movin forward. Yeah!!!!!

After stayin in Austin for a week, they sent him back to College Station Hospital because the "valve" that lets the excess fluid from your brain drain, wasn't working properly. So....they moved him back Tuesday evening, done the proceedure and put a shunt in, to drain the fluid, then today they'll be moving him back to the Rehab Center in Austin.

In just one week of being there, he's movin his fingers and toes on command. Will squeeze your hand when told to squeeze. They said that the excess fluid on his brain was probably what's keeping him from regainin conciousness. So they are very hopefull that now that the shunt is in place that it shouldn't be long before he wakes up.

I guess sometimes the longer they stay unconcious, the more healing they are able to do??? makes sense to me. I just hafta keep remindin myself, and everyone in the family, that everything happens for a reason. Even tho we want him awake, it just may not be the right time yet. It'll happen when the time is right. God knows more about what's goin on than any of us, or the dr's know. And we just hafta keep faith that it'll all work out like it's supposed to.

Still sending prayers your way Lilly.Wherever Gods leading you he has a reason, its really not up to us to question why,it doesn't make it easier but it helps handle it.Remember Faith doesn't get you around trouble it helps you through it....Greg and Mairi

I have heard the same thing about being unconsious is the body's way of dealing with injury. We're still thinking of you and his family, and hoping that each new day brings new hope...thanks for letting us know.

It is truly amazing each tiny sign of improvement. We're praying for their strength during the long road ahead, Lily.

For you Lilly.......

Song of Hope
In the dark moments of my coma, a special song on the radio helped me find my way out.
By Shelly Guidotti

It had been over a week and the only sounds you could hear were coming from the machines that were keeping me alive.

The brain hemorrhage had been massive and doctors say I should have died instantly. When I didn't, they immediately warned my family that if I ever did come out of the coma, there most likely would be a host of disabilities to face.

Frightening to say the least, that list included everything from severe brain damage, to an inability to walk, or even blindness. So immediately, all my family and friends went into "official denial mode" -- refusing to accept any of this and instead, began searching for ways to rouse me from my silence.

Learn how to share and depend on one another.

Though doctors refused to put any stock in this, some response was seen through my vital signs as they would change, depending on the visitor. My heart rate would slow or increase and my blood pressure would elevate or move lower. There were even some who were not allowed to see me as it appeared they agitated me too much -- something that was strictly prohibited!

This whole response thing gave my brother-in-law, Greg, an idea. As a great supporter of my singing and songwriting career, Greg decided to take some of my songs I had recently recorded to a local radio station, where he explained about my illness. He told them he was sure I could hear what was going on around me and he knew that having my own songs played on the radio was a huge dream of mine. He was sure this could reach me and do more than any medicine or machine could.

Times have changed and radio stations are not as free to do this sort of thing because of the legalities. So it was to Greg's amazement and delight, that without hesitation, they agreed to help! They even gave him a specific date and time so that he could have "radio in hand" at my hospital bed. Greg's idea had filled everyone with hope and now the moment had arrived. Nervous from sheer anticipation, Greg held the radio close to my ear, while family joined hands and watched over me hoping for any reaction.

The DJ made a pre-song announcement about my situation to the general audience, then spoke directly to me.

"Shelly this is for you, I want you to REALLY LISTEN now. This is not just your song we're playing, but your family's song of hope. All of us at KKDJ wish you a speedy recovery."

Everyone in the room held their breath as the music began. The song was only part way into its verse, when they all witnessed the tears streaming down my pale cheeks. Though still not awake, it was obvious I heard my song. Greg said everyone, including medical personnel, cheered! It was in this moment, the very hope everyone had asked for, was realized.

Just a few days later, hope turned into reality. I did in fact awaken and how fitting that Greg was the first person to see me open my eyes.

Though not completely unscathed, I did not suffer from any of the major disabilities that had been predicted.

Hope and love have no boundaries -- it is not something we can put on paper, or adeptly describe. It does not recognize medical science as its governing law.

Hope is the part of us that makes us pick up the pieces and try again. Without hope where would we be?

Thank you for that Katrina. Sittin here readin it, I got tears.

I will be printing this off and giving it to his wife.

Also, while doin my reading on brain injuries the other day(which I seem to do alot of lately), I found a website that has free downloadable software called Azam.
It is a program especially made for brain injury patients, that lets the family (or whoever) to make cd's that have recorded messages from family members, favorite music, poems, whatever. The thing that they say makes this really work is the fact that you can overlap the message. So it's like everyone is talking at once. Which in turn makes the patient really hafta think and listen. It's supposed to aid in the waking up process too. A neat feature of the program is it allows you to record off of your telephone. So if someone far away, that's close to the person wants to put a message on the cd you can do it that way. When I found this website, it was unthinkable to try to download it, cuz of my dial up. But this weekend, our oldest went shoppin and bought a wireless card for the computer. We are too far away for high speed internet from the phone company, and our satellite service has terminated any new accounts, because they don't want to overload their system. Now....with this card, the internet is fast, and I think I can download it with no problems.

Thanks again Katrina :D

Katrina, that was a really awesome post!

Lilly, I'm glad to hear your brother in law in making some progress. That program you found sounds really neat. I am glad you found a way to get it downloaded. Your son's a gem!

We have a couple of friends (ironically father and son) who both have had head injuries from horse accidents. The father got in a really bad wreck at a branding, and the son in a rodeo accident. Both have recovered and it's such a blessing. In both cases it took a LONG time.

Keep your spirits and patience up!

Good to hear some good news, we'll continue to keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

Cheers---

TTB

That really was a great post Katrina...talk about giving families hope! I'll be anxious to hear Lilly how that family CD will work for you...what a neat idea...Keep us informed.

Jassy, I haven't as of yet downloaded the program. I'll give it a try. I"m still wondering how I'll record messages from family members LOL that part blows my lil mind. His wife came home yesterday, and every day she gets to call, and they put the phone to his ear and let him listen to her talk to him. I thought that was pretty neat, that they'll take the time to do that. They have his favorite music cd's already there that they let him listen to. As of yesterday, he's doin the "hook em horns" sign with his hands.
