I recently got some rubber belting that is 4 feet wide and 600 feet long I am going to put it up around my calving pad for a wind break. My question is this what is the best way to pull it tight and secure it to the wood posts, how far apart to put the posts. I have my ideas on how to do it but if any one out there has had experience with this I would surely welcome any thoughts or ideas.

Half inch

4 feet X 600 feet X 1/2 inch. Yup. I think that would do the trick if it's tough enough material....and if it's belt material, you'd think it would be.

I know this doesn't help with your original question. Sorry. :D

If that is good belting put it on craig's list ( I just paid a little over $20.00 per foot for some ) and take the money and build any windbreak you want and a couple more cows to stand behind it.

If it is not good enough for that it is very heavy and would need a good post at least every 8 to 10 feet. Make sure you use a good post as the weight of the belt plus the wind it catches will try to distroy ahything that is not strong.

Belting like that makes great backstops for a shooting range. Drape it over a 4X6 so that the belts are 4" apart and another 4X6 on the back side of a good power pole and you end up with 4 belts hanging loose at the bottom and they will collect your lead at the bottom! Helps to keep the EPA off your back.

What I'd do if I was you is ship that belting out to the desert and be happy it was gone, thus saving myself a lot of work! Seriously though, set your post or better yet ties every 8 feet. I'd build an L shaped wind break to provide shelter in all directions. Build it extra stout with strain braces at the corner and each end. Then use a couple of 6 by 6's with five bolts to make a clamp for pulling the belting up snug and lag bolt it with big washers to your posts. Or you could send it my way and not worry about it! :D When you get her built, lets see how she turns out.

H your idea on how to build it was what I was thinking of doing. Believe it or not I just bought it from a guy for a dallor a foot so I kind feel good about the whole deal :? . H I was also wondering if in your spare time you could come and teach me how to work a shovel :D the pay is not that good but the company would be priceless.

Why not run a square tube rail from post to post say 12 feet apart-- use self tapping screws to screw it to the tube-- it stays flat the posts won't draw to the weight of the belting-- be a lot easier than trying to get fence tight

Drill a hole in the top of the belt and put in a clevis. use a loader to lift it up and screw it to the first two posts. Go back abought three posts drill a hole put in a clevis and use the loader to lift it up and back up until tight. screw it to posts and back off three more posts and repeat. I built a weaning pen with belting and 1" sucker rod last fall. It took me two days to figure the system out and do 150' . Did the remaining 600' in abought 6 hours
