Nice rain today, 10-08-10

Once again, I am happy for you folks but envious. I did mow the grass today, and vaccinated calves; two things I couldn't have done if it were raining :D

We only picked up enough to get the ground muddy-- but some areas south, east, and west of us got over an inch...Pheasant hunters all got soaked for awhile this morning- opening day....

Wednesday I trailed some of the cows I had in a community pasture about 5 miles toward home- dropped them about 4 miles from home in an empty pasture- and went up on Thursday and picked up the cows and trailed them the rest of the way home...

Usually by the next morning they have trailed themselves home and are waiting at the gate- but with all the abundance of grass/water this year- they were just laying in a coulee about a mile from home, so I actually had to trail them a little....

I snapped the next few pictures to show how green the country still is...Even tho down on the creek bottoms its been grazed short- its still green and growing

Some of the cows hit the creek first...

Then all their sisters/cousins came running out of the hills- and altho its only been 3 months they been apart had to go to fighting and welcoming each other...

Here is an OCC Magnitude bull calf out of one the heifers we bought from Whitney Creek--- not going to have a lot of frame size (probably a 4) - but will be a little chunk... His half sister out of a Bannon of Wye daughter is also a sweet looking little heifer.....

Definitely not the best picture- but I had his mother and a dozen others surrounding me hoping I had a little cake in my vest pockets and they could get a cake handout- and had to snap it when I got an opening... :D

Nice bull calf. What would you take for him, with delivery in on the deal? :-)

Thanks Soap-I could use a trip to NB--but not going to sell him tho...He's the one that got snakebit as a calf- and while I doubt it will ever bother him- I could never guarantee his soundness... Going to keep him around and use him on a few of our own cows and see how he does...Another way to stick some good maternal blood (Cole Creek Juanada Lad 81T, Basin Max 104J, OCC Emblazon, EXT) back into our cows- and moderate frame on some....

happy to hear you got some rain, Soapweed. our forecasters were talking a big talk, but we never got a drop. to bad...we could use a good soaker. maybe next time....
