Lets just say I don't want to look at any sires that has EXT in them. So what pedigrees do you suggest that would be considered "teat" and udder improvers.

Also, if there is a known cow with poor teat and udder quality in the pedigree such as "Miss Torpedo Teat 04" Is there more of a bad influence if she is on the paternal side of the sires' pedgree?

Would you stay away from a potential sire if "Miss Torpedo Teat 04" is the maternal granddam?

One I have heard touted by some locally this year is Cole Creek Black Cedar 46P-- # 14496765...

Greg wrote in his catalog this year:

We kept Black Cedar to breed to our heifers. He is a super calving ease bull with some go when they wean. He is a superb heifer bull. Calves show excellent performance. You won't find any better daughters. Quiet dispositions, excellent udders, and they want to be mothers.

And thats about what a couple of folks that saw him, his calves, and the cows out of him have told me...

An unproven young son of Gregs is Cole Creek Juanada Lad 81T # 15483092-- and being a son of Juanda 7 of PJM with HBR Encore 0544 as mgs, should have plenty of maternal behind him...Anyway thats what I gambled getting a couple of his yearling daughters this year...

Another I've seen some nice daughters (and sons) of is Bannon of Wye 8420 (now deceased) # 13560373... My own daughters of the bull are just coming on line- nice and quiet- and I'm anxious to see how they turn out...Altho at 54 inch's- just 4 frame- he may be smaller than what you want...

I also have a 27 month old son of his (with Basin Max 602C as a mgs) that is barely a 5 frame (if that)....One of the things I'm looking for out of him is the maternal combination of Bannon and 602C.. Got his first calves on the ground now- and so far satisfied....Both they and he are real quiet too....

I got my fill of the torpedo teats with the years of chasing the "bull of the month" ... Thats what I'm trying to clean up now...

Larry Leonhardt (guru of Angus genetics) says the most important individual in the pedigree is the grand dam on the maternal side.
I have read for a long time now, that the bad udders come from the bull.
So I'd really check out the pedigree of any bull I used. We have gone back to 'old proven bloodlines' and it's safe to say, we don't have a bad uddered cow here. And we won't tolerate it if one shows up.

If I were A1'ing this year, I'd have to use ABS bull, Rito Legacy, a
son of Rito 707 out of a 6807 daughter. Our cowherd is based on the Rito lines until we ran out of Rito stuff because the 'bull of the month' came in to play. The Rito calves grew like weeds; they had explosive growth and yet the cows were excellent. Rito 054 was an excellent female maker.
I talked with Russ Denowh years ago, because we were trying to decide between Rito 2100 and Rito 054. He told me, and I quote, "I've never had to cull an 054 daughter because of udders. I can't say that about 2100."
So we used 054 and was glad we did. Many bad udders came from 2100.
When John Hamilton dispersed his herd, people came from all over to that sale because of the heavy influence of 054 (John Hamilton owned the bull. Gartner-Denowh raised him.)

I've heard really good things about Homer, as Denny mentioned.
And he is using Viking GD60. I think those cattle are sound all around.
Too bad there aren't more of him~~

He may be some kind of guru, but this just isn't how genetics work. Bad information getting worse by the re-telling. All four grandparents have the exact same potential of genetic impact. Sorry to call you out on that Faster Horses. It just isn't so.

Well, I didn't say it. Larry Leonhardt said it.
I was there, I heard it from the horses' mouth.
He didn't say none of the other individuals were important, he said "the most important individual..."

I have sold advertising to producers regarding their production sales for years. What I heard over and over was how much Larry knows about genetics. I heard it for years and from a lot of people. Have you ever talked with Larry? It's very different and very informative.

I stand by what I quoted.

That's all fine and good. I'm not looking to disparage his good name or yours, for that matter. If he's a respected breeder and knower of cattle, then by golly that's just great for him. I'm not buying that one little piece of his wisdom, though. It's America and you and I can be plumb happy to disagree on it. :P

Not a big enough stick -eh :???:   :P

6807, 6I6, Emblazon....I'm going to AI quite a few cows to 6I6 this year for that very reason, beautiful cows with beautiful udders. 6I6 sired steer calves may not have the growth a lot of producers are looking for now days, but his daughters will not dissapoint you. Personaly, I don' t select bulls for big steers, I select for quality replacements. And while doing that, the steers seem to weigh up just fine in the fall.
