Third gear in the 7400 started slipping and eventually failed yesterday. Have to pull the screen out of the suction line this morning and see if there are pieces of spring (good) or pieces of clutch disc (not good). If it is clutch the tractor will have to go to the shop for a dangerous (expensive) operation. The dealer has a loaner 7200 in Quesnel that can come here today if mine has to go to the surgeon.
This is the first major problem with this tractor, it has 10320 hours on it as of yesterday.

Dear lord that thing is a machine. you must take very good care of your equipment. Even if it is the clutch that should be an easy fix, but yes expensive, but it will be good as new soon for ya.
 
Is that the PQ or powershift? Expensive either way I suppose. We have a 7700 powershift with 9600 hrs on it and I'm curious as to how long it may last.

It is the forward/reverse shifter that has lost third in both directions.
 
it seems buying the equipment is the cheap part anymore :( but with that many hours with no major repairs, the tractor still probably doesn't owe you much......doesn't make writing the check any easier though. :? you may have to start charging H a bit more in friendship dues, that should help out with the tractor repair. :D :wink:
 
Well, it's going to be a dangerous operation. :(
Silver, the salesman said that 3rd gear going out at between 10 and 13,000 hours is just like clockwork on these models. The bad part now is the folks that had the loaner ran it into a tree last night and did some damage that will put it in the shop for a couple days. :mad:
I will know tonight if it can be repaired by early next week or they are going to bring an old Case for me to feed with. (Not looking forward to going back to our early years. :( )
As for now am just going to put the oil back in and not use third until they pick it up. With any luck it won't do further damage. There wasn't much debris floating around in the oil so wish me luck.

Well I'm sorry to hear your bad news gcreek. I hope you get away with the minimum on this deal. I still haven't got it through my thick head which transmission you have though. I'm guessing it must be the power quad to have a reverser :???:
I imagine it's a fair trucking bill from your house to civilization too :(

It's a green tractor with a cab and loader. :D
I don't know what they call this transmission. :???: 1 stick is A B C D the other is beside it with 4 forward and 4 reverse. It doesn't have a reverser on the column like the 6410 does.
We are needing another tractor so if we wait for the 7200 and like it, the trucking will be reduced a bunch.

It's a green tractor with a cab and loader. :D

OK, I get you now. I'm just figuring this stuff out myself because our green tractor is a fairly new addition for us. It has a 19 spd powershift.... you don't need the clutch, all the gears are in a straight line and you just put it in whatever gear you want and off you go :)
Yes, trucking to here is expensive. And mechanics to here are really expensive because they usually have to come at least twice.. once to diagnose and again with the right parts. :? So needless to say not many mechanics find their way out here.
 
John Deere called today My skidloader troubles were in the ignition switch fixed that and the lights $106 to haul it in and $535 to get it out. I wanted the heater fixed also and they said that the motor is $305 plus shipping I told them to skip it. I've got an Idea I can rig up the heater alot cheaper than that. Also it has a flat tire now and they wanted to know if I wanted them to fix it. It had went flat a couple days prior to the breakdown and I used eyther to set the bead and it took air I'm guessing the rim is bent but at $72 an hour I can take the tracks off and fix a flat tire I've been putting tubes in each one as I have a flat. Explain to me why they would put tubeless tires on a skid loader idiots I figure.

They fixed the lights that in itself is going to be nice.

Monday I'm tearing down my front wheel assist in my Red Russian it's never ending.
 
well thanks guy now you've given me something to look foward too , we have a 7410 , I guess I'll start put some money away for that fatefull day , there's only one problem ,I need to find the money first :?
 
I have a 7700 MFD with the powerquad tranny with a little over 14000
hours on it. All it has been used for is baling and loader work.
Wonder how many times it has been shifted. At about 11000 hrs
I lost all gears. Think they called it a smart box in transmission.
Something to do with the shifting linkage.
Wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. That the only trouble
so far. Been an outstanding tractor. Even will start down to about
-10 degrees without pluging in.
 
we have a 7410 power quad and a 7600 with a power quad. I like the 10 series better each tractor has a loader and about 4000 hrs but both have been problem free except a igniton switch in the 7410. of course dad has both of them we have a 79 986 international that I'll feed with when we move the cows off of stalks down here to calf. we have the snow blower on the 7410 . and dad needs chains on the 7600 to feed in the mud up there.
 
Why is it everything in the mechanical department extracts an ouch from our pockets? I'm considering a pre-emptive strike on my tractor - it has worn hardy spicer joints on the front wheel final drives which will be a $1600 job, the rear tires are getting pretty worn and it has a habit of needing a new clutch every 1000 hrs - we are at about 600 on this one. I'm thinking it might be time to trade - have any of the posters on here experience of Landini tractors?? I know they are not the Rolls Royce of tractors but as I'm a mechanic simpleton and only put 500hrs a year on a tractor I'm thinking a used one of this breed might be about my price/requirements level.

I'm pretty much stuck on green...... depending on the model of tractor.
This 7400 has been a very dependable tractor, still will start at -35-40 without being plugged in although it is hard on it so we do plug it in for a couple of hours or build a fire in the shop.
For what we paid for this tractor, what it is worth today and what our repair bill has been/will be it has cost in the neighborhood of $2.25 an hr for the 8000 hrs we have owned it. Very reasonable for the work it has done.
Our first cab tractor was a less popular brand. It was cheap. It was garbage and lost 50% of it's new value in 30 months that we owned it.
Dealer is also something to take into consideration. At times dollar wise is better than penny foolish. :wink: :D
 
That makes sense gcreekrch but with the use I put a tractor to, on the scale I'm on I'm just not able to justify buying a $70,000 used tractor at the moment on the strength of it having a high resale down the line. I really like the tractor I have - always been a MF driver - but this series is renowned for having bad clutches and I didn't know that when I bought it. It costs $2500-$3000 to put a new clutch in and if we need one every 1000 hrs that already puts our cost higher than yours. I've been studying the Landini and like the fact they are built modular so that clutch or driveline etc repairs are a lot simpler as the whole tractor doesn't need to come to pieces. Got Perkins engines too which I don't think can be topped. I'm a bit frightened to buy green around here - too many colonies and I know they beat the @%#^ out of their tractors - and they are nearly all Deeres.
 
GF, if you can get your hands on a New Holland / Ford Genesis series tractor you'll never regret it. They're a little large for a lot of ranch situations (the 8670 is the smallest one at 145hp), but they last forever, are pretty cheap on fuel, are comfortable and quiet to run.... near as I can tell they never made a green one any better.
