I groomed dogs for years, and I've seen some amazing things come out of coats. Once found a sucker, not even half eaten!
Since I did it at a vet clinic, we would get the BAD dogs that groomers wouldn't do. The once a year St. Bernards, and nasty little lapdogs with rotten teeth, no manners and you know what stuck to their butts.
One time a guy brought in a four year old poodle who had never had a haircut! This dog lived on a farm and spent a lot of time out with cattle and whatever. Not a phoo phoo lap dog by any means, but nevertheless, he was a purebred miniature. He had a coat that almost reached to the floor, and hadn't seen anything clearly past his hairy face in a long time. The guy didn't give me any directions, just said clip him, so I decided to use my discretion and "Poodle him up". I got most of the coat off in one big piece, and found a really nice dog underneath it. I even gave him a pom pom on his head and tail, and managed to not have to shave his ears. He had the little poms around his ankles too! He quite frankly looked like a million bucks. Anyway, the guy shows up to get his dog, and while he was paying for the haircut, I let the dog out. The owner was standing at the counter, and this poodle was going balistic bouncing off his leg, and he says to me, "Are you going to bring me my dog now?" His face was priceless when I told him that the poodle WAS his dog.    He said he had no idea he owned such a fancy dog. He didn't let his coat get so far out of control again.
