here are a few "States" that are colored in but not named..

Long Island, Delmarva, Cape Cod, North Michigan

and the funny tan "States" Cuba, Mexico, Bahamas, Canada,

and the two "States" over by the Alaska map.. Russia and little Canada.. which doesn't count as they are part of the country of Alaska..

so there are 48 regular states, the four colored states, the four tan states,

and the other countries on the map Hawaii and Alaska with Russia and little Canada..
