our local 4H club held it's show today-our critters didn't win anything but Sara won Grooming and second in judging. The top end steers were a pretty strong group for sure-anybody want to guess their colour lol.

Does Canadian Steer Shows (judges) use yeild grade as a selection tool more than quality grade. I heard Canada does not use the USA type of carcass grading system.

As the shows start here some of the exhibitors do not expect to win the shows as some familys are heavy into purchasing and fitting SHOW Steers. Where the normal group of familys try to exhibit locally produced cattle. Usually the first steer in our sales can be one of the lowest sellers of the junior steer sale.

Many years ago, a friend dabbled briefly with Braunvieh cattle. He took a pen of three to a show quite some distance from where he lived. Right off the bat he knew he was in trouble when the official judge was wearing a ball cap proclaiming "Chianina." :-)

NR - glad to hear the show went well. Hope you got a bit of the nice weather for it. I would like to take a trip that way next year.
HF - The canadian system is pretty similar to the US grading system. Prime = Prime, AAA = Choice, AA = Select, etc. We don't use KPH. I am not sure what steer show judges use...

I think some of them use the "Who's your Daddy" method

And then by color :?

George Larre a big commercial rancher judged the district today and did a real good job-or at least I agreed with him lol. The top steer brought 4.20 and weighed a bit over 1300. The same two that were grand and reserve in our club woin district they just reversed positions-they were blacks lol. There isn't as much of the old boys club in judging as there used to be thank god.
