...... because he's cheap and I dislike listening to reason. :D

What do you think bulls that are a touch above average should be worth this year? Breed is a non-topic, the good ones almost always cost more.

They are just Herefords so you might have to adjust up for "better" cattle but Van Newkirk's in Nebraska average $6443 on 159 head of bulls today. (not official sale report)

Looks like that might be a touch less than last years $6932 average on 142 head of bulls.

Gee that looks a lot like the breed is in decline.$500 dollars less on average.

Sad

Interesting. Don't take my numbers as gospel, but it was what I was told.

If they are in the same neighborhood as last year, they will be in the $4000 range out here. Thats for better than average. Average bulls were $3000 and really smoking hot bulls were in a neighborhood i can't see from my cowcamp.

In our part of the world $6,500 ought to buy a solid bull but won't touch a really good bull. Of course, it depends on the operation that's being analyzed. :dunce:

I bought five bulls for one of our friends at a production sale and they averaged $5000.

They were straight Black angus, fall calves born fall of 2011, so they'll be good sized to use in late June when he turns them out. The cheapest bull I bought was one the breeders sold an interest in as they want to collect him.

They offered to winter them for $300/head so he left them to be
wintered where they are.

just buy pasture next to a guy who spends a fortune on bulls, drop the gate a few times, and you will be fine.... it has worked for my neighbor the past 3 years.

i sure don't expect the price to drop any, especially in this part of the country with all the oil money that is floating around. i have been buying commercial bulls the last several years for about 1/2 of what the registered bulls are averaging. 100% of our bulls were registered at one time, i think that number is more like 20% now.

as Soapweed once said...."if EPDs are a clue, then my bulls are clueless." :D

We've been buying good commercial bulls from a couple of outfits with outstanding cattle the last number of years, and haven't paid over $2,500. I am trying to sneak some simmie back into the herd, so the RA / Simmie bulls are proving a good way to do that.
It's pretty easy to go to an aucton and get caught up in the commotion and promotion and end up paying big dollars. There are a lot of good bulls out there where you can see the sires, dams, sisters and brothers, see how the operation is run, and pay a lot less.
Of course, I'm not interested in EPD's in the least so maybe that broadens my market a little

That hits close to home for me we spend fair bit of money on our bulls and our neighbor not only drops the gate he cuts the fence. I will pm you Jigs to see if he is your long lost cousin :D

That's why I kind of like electric fence and synching young cows. You can usually keep neighbouring bulls a fence or two away and the estrumate cleans out any "unwanted surprises". Not sure which is worse, trich or a surprise calf from a heifer and an unknown bull designed for use on cows.

i am interested in EPDs, but as a commercial outfit, i just can't justify spending what it costs to own them. the bulls i've been buying are 90% AI sired and i'm also able to view the bull's mother, which i feel is most important.

I agree totally with you Justin, I've been buying commercial bulls since 1997 with great results. My cows used to be too tall with not enough capacity and some disposition problems to boot. That all came from Angus bulls with EPDs. I've made great progress in the last 15 years with commercial bulls from river rat and his family.

EPDs are of no use to me either although they are another source of information that interest some.

50% of our bulls are home raised, based on their mother only as we use a multi-sire system of breeding. I have been able to see the cowherd that we buy bulls from several times so know what I'm getting. We don't buy big, high performing bulls but I do like the good ones from the moderate frame, easy keeping sort of the bunch.

That's a trip I'd like to make! Hopefully we have our bull situation covered already with deals we made over the winter, but you never know how many wont test out. The red factor isn't important to me (although I do like it), we run a large contingent of Blonde bulls and Blonde x cows so uniformity is quite good. Besides, a few spotted cows for herd markers are good for Alzheimers sufferers like me :D

silver-watch for the pamphlet in beef in b.c.march issue or check the bc livestock producers coop website as both williams lake and vanderhoof have simmies on offer that are very affordable.
