About sundown, Peach Blossom and I decided to go to town, thirteen miles away, in our Polaris Ranger. We took the scenic route along the old railroad right-of-way, which is now devoid of tracks. Here, Peach Blossom has just shut one of the various gates along the old track

Neat pictures Soapweed. Whudja do when ya got to town......looks like a good night to go get a nanner split, or a sundae :D

We got several days worth of mail, said hi to our kid, and treated ourselves to pop and jerky at the gas station before heading back home. :)

Looks like a nice trip, pretty sure your weathers way nicer then ours tonight, couldn't see the end of our noses because of thick fog,and a rain coat would be in order.

Hey, Soap, that looks like a pretty romantic way to travel at night.

I been wanting one of those since I rode in the mountains with my
friend Sue. It really blows your hair back. we had dogs and more
dogs with us. One in the front with his feet braced on the dash
and the others in the back. When one of us got out, one of the dogs
in the back jumped into our seat and refused to leave. It was a tug-
o-war several times. Dogs growling and us gals laughing.
I had such a good time.

Soapweed-

Just a reminder about that old railroad right-of-way! About 56 years ago I was taking the 'long' way back from one of my students ranches in Colorado, and the road crew was grading an abandoned section of an old railroad grade and re-routing the 'old' road (isn't there always an "old road??) onto the old railroad grade! Well, I ran over seven old railraod spikes and DESTROYED all four tires on my car! 14 miles from town on a dirt and gravel road!! Walked about five of those miles before I got a ride. Do you think that I got any remuneration from the County because they didn't post any warning signs regarding those spikes - even after I contacted the County Attorney and threatened to sue the County in small claims court??? HAH! Cost me four new tires (and also four new tubes then ) and some sore feet!

You had better watch out for those old rusty spikes on that roadbed!

You are sure right about the old spikes being hard on tires. When the railroad abandoned this line, an outfit came in to pick up the old tracks. They just took out the spikes and left them behind. There was a lot of gravel on the old bed, and a local businessman bought it.

The road into our ranch was only a Sandhills trail road at that time (around 1990). We are not condidered a "county road" because we are the only ones at the end of the line. There has to be at least two parties that jointly use a road for it to be considered a "county road" to get county help in maintaining it. Anyway, we decided it would be an excellent opportunity to get some inexpensive nearby gravel to make a better road.

This gravel was hauled onto our road back in about 1990. Scads of spikes came free with the deal, and they were like weeds in a cornfield. A magnet was dragged over the completed road, and it picked up quite a bunch of spikes. We walked it several times picking up spikes. We have ruined countless tires, and have barrels full of the sharp pointy objects that we have picked up the last fifteen or more years. Even to this day, we can be driving along and see a spike or two to pick up. When we buy tires, we always pay extra to get the road hazard guarantee.

This old railroad line was originally going to become a hiking and biking trail. The powers-that-be seemed to run out of both money and enthusiasm, so it is pretty much grown up to weeds at this time. We did enjoy exploring it on a beautiful mild November evening.

Only bad thing about a horseless carriage on a pretty moonlite night like last night, you can't throw the reins on the dash and let the horse do the driving

Soap, It won't be long before you'll need a windshield and top on that Polaris.

You'll be surprised how much warmer you'll be with something to stop the wind.

I couldn't do without them on my mule.

My thoughts exactly FH...what a great evening for a romantic drive through the sandhills...the sky sure would put any cowboy in the mood for a little singing along the trail to his sweetheart.... So can you sing too Soapweed???? It was very nice here last nite also...but we spent the evening in the hottub and enjoying the peace and quiet after such a busy day. Great pictures once again, and despite our desolate surroundings, there is always something new to photograph in these ole sandhills.
