Monday of last week, we turned out bulls with yearling heifers and two-year-old heifers. Yesterday (Monday, a week later), we turned bulls out with all the rest of the older cows.

Man alive, those red calves look reaaaalllyy good!!!

And so do the bulls. And so does the country!!

YIPPEEE!!!!!

Thanks, FH. We wintered over a few Red Simmental bulls, and these were turned out with the red cows. One thing about breeding a red cow to a red bull, the offspring always turns out red. When black is used on red, or vice versa, there is a chance to get a grey calf or even a rat-tail.

Here is a genetic question. I have one bull that is a black baldy. He is half Simmental and half Angus. Last year, he was used on both red cows and black cows. I know he sired some grey calves out of the red cows. We also got some grey calves out of Angus cows, but they probably came from a red Simmental bull that was also in the same pasture. My question is, if this black baldy bull is used only on black Angus cows, could a grey calf result? Just curious, and I haven't turned him out yet. So far, he is just a "spare".

Did the grey calves have a rat tail?

If so, I think you could get that out of Black cows as well, but both have to be a carrier of that gene.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me...

Regretfully, some of grey calves did have rat-tails.

About the trees....I told a friend of mine yesterday who lives in NE how many trees I had to cut down in my backyard to make room for the addition to my house...... he had a squealing hissy!!

I had to cut 45 trees!!!!

I'd be drawn and quartered in NE for doing that......even IF I could find 45 trees in a bunch!!!!
