you can also toss 'em on the branding stove. ;)

Thats the way I lke them the best. Some Lowery's seasoning salt is good on them, that way. Just learned that this spring.

You can make a beer batter also. But on the stove is still the best. :)

When our daughter married a guy raised in the twin cities I served prairie oysters for the rehearsal supper here at the ranch. I used a beer batter and deep fried them.

Made a big hit with everyone until we let them know what they were eating!!! Some of the city folks still went back for seconds after they knew what the delicacies were.

We had a bunch of 4H girls from Quebec come to our branding -they had a supper to attend but they circled back for the nut fry and festivities-I don't think they'll ever forget watching the sun rise at our place lol.

So how does one clean them other than just rince them off?

You squeeze them split the membrane with a knife and squeeze the inside's out and that's all there is to it.

After cleaning the nut, I slice them pretty thin, dip in milk and egg, roll in cracker or bread crumbs mixed with lawry's seasoning salt, and deep fry or pan fry till crispy. If you are doing a big batch and want to freeze them, clean the nut, freeze a little to make it stiff, slice with a meat slicer, lay on cookie sheets and place in freezer for a while to make them solid, then dump into freezer bags. They wont stick together then, and can easily be taken out to cook how ever many you want, and the rest put back in freezer. When I lived in SD, we would have wild game feeds and such that every rancher in the area would save the nuts..have one big party night for cleaning them, and one big party night for cooking them. We would serve over 750 people...THOSE WERE THE GOOOOD OLE DAYS!!
