praying against the buzzards

I lost a darned calf last night. I saw #3 (first cow I bought in 2003) was going to calve and should've penned her, but she's a pretty easy keeper and has just gone off and come back with a calf in the past.

Well, she's been gone since Monday night and I think I've seen the last of her alive, but I can't figure this one out. I'm sure the buzzards will tell me all I need to know in a day or two. Man, I just despise buzzards and coyotes.

Last night I went walking around the brush and found a dead bull calf on the other side of one of my boundary fences. My assumption is that he crawled under or through and then couldn't figure his way back across. That's never happened to me before as they always find their way back. Until now, I guess.

I have just 200 acres of thick mesquite and grass country (it was fields and the mesquite grew up in it, so it's all bermuda, klein, etc. under the trees), but my whole herd can hide without being found at all for a week if they want to. Of course, I just holler for them and they come running. Unless they are calving. Then they will hide up in a thicket for a couple of days by themselves and then pop up with a calf.

What I can't figure is if the calf is dead, where is the cow? Unless it was twins and the second one hung up, she oughta be out walking around somewhere. I think twins are about one in 66, so that's not much of a chance.

I've also never lost a cow that threw a calf and got clear of it. I mean, if the calf is out, my cows have always made it no matter what happened to the calf.

Well, I walked the callouses off the balls of my feet (rubber boots because we actually had some rain lately) and prayed about it. I just hope she's either dead or alive by now and not between. I've hunted all my life and killed about every animal you can. But I hate it when they suffer more than anything. I'd rather find her dead or shoot her myself on day one than think I can't find here and have her die slow over a few days.

A uterine prolapse at calving will do that - live calf, dead cow. Hope that's not what it is.

Good luck.

Ive sure found live calf, dead cow different times. I think probably internal bleeding is the most common deal. I've seen calf stick a foot through the womb. Two years ago a cow was calving just about dark. I left and had supper. After supper we went out and the calf was up wandering around, the cow dead as a hammer. Maybe that is why your bull calf didn't come home--no momma to call him. Too bad. I guess if it don't hurt a little you are in the wrong line of work.

I've got 180 acres in one pasture, where the cows stay alot and especially when calving I walked it twice a day, early AM and last thing PM.

I'd ck out all the favorite ' cow hangouts' and then look in that place where you've thought, " Nah..she couldn't be THERE"....go there first!!

:lol2: Ain't that the truth.

And take a dog with you. Old Mexican proverb:

"Dog, he not find cow - cow with new calf find dog."

I thought about saying ' take the dog' but guessed I'd get slammed by the anti-cow dog faction!!

I couldn't find one cow this AM....hunted and hunted and then I went back to the barn to get the mule truck & dogs and I then found that I'd left one gate open on the far end.

I heard a racket in the main hall....looked & there she was WITH HER BABY!. She had enough sense to get in the house!!!

Thanks for the thoughts.

How about this question:

I am thinking if the cow turns up I will go Saturday morning and buy her a calf to raise. Have any luck with that?

I wouldn't, if I were in your position. Too late and potentially too labor intensive for the time you can spare. I'd take my whipping and think ahead to next year.

Leave her be and see what happens next year.

Too much pain and agony for all concerned to graft a calf @ this late date UNLESS you really like bottle calves cause she'll reject it and YOU for trying!!!

When I read the title of this post I thought it was the Mexican Buzzards getting calves.

We have a new one...couple days old now....went out to put out hay the day it was born, and there were 4 of the buzzards surrounding it. So I ran em off....and then just kinda hung around the cow and calf for a lil while......they haven't been back, and the calf is now runnin happily around with his tail in the air.

Pure luck tho drivin up when I did.

buying a replacement calf is the best way to bring home scours.
dont even think about it! We cull the cow if she doesnt have a live calf and raise it.
