CATTLE CONFLICT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
R-CALF members reportedly bought and sold Canadian beef cattle.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According an article in the Billings (Montana) Gazette newspaper, members of the Ranch-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, which has petitioned to stop the resumption of live Canadian cattle imports, bought and sold cattle in Canada after the border was closed in May 2003 when a cow with bovine spongiform encephalopathy was discovered in Alberta.

"This is an old issue that the Canadian press is trying to sensationalize and turn into fresh news," R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard told MeatNews Daily. "In years past and in isolated instances, R-CALF USA members did do business in Canada, and have suffered economic losses as a result. Contrary to recent, inaccurate Canadian media reports, R-CALF USA does not believe that any of its members recently have purchased Canadian cattle."

Bullard added: "This is an emerging issue and U.S producers who have cattle in Canada are experiencing the same economic challenges associated with Canada's BSE problem as are Canadian producers."

According to the Billings Gazette article, a feedlot operator in Lethbridge, Alberta, told the Canadian press that "members (of R-CALF) recognized an economic opportunity for their own gain. They were absolutely not concerned about food safety."

R-CALF president Leo McDonnell Jr. called the issue a "red herring" and said he has o problem with R-CALF members doing business in Canada. He noted that they have done business in Canada for years, as have other U.S. cattlemen who are not R-CALF members.

The newspaper article said R-CALF member Lloyd DeBruycker, said he has approximately 50 head of feeder cattle in Canada. He did not see any contradiction in owning and selling cattle in Canada and opposing live imports. DeBruycker said last year he had a Canadian packer refuse to slaughter the cattle he had in a Canadian feedlot. He said the packer refused not just because he was a member of R-CALF, but "they were not killing for any Americans."

Last week, R-CALF convinced U.S. District Richard Cebull in Billings to issue a preliminary injunction preventing USDA from opening the border as planned last Monday to Canadian live cattle younger than 30 months of age.

"We are urging USDA to adopt safe and sound practices. R-CALF members favor open and fair trade and will support the reopening of the Canadian border when science, not politics, tells us to do so," Bullard told MeatNews Daily. "As far as young cattle go, we disagree with USDA's statement that BSE is not found in cattle younger than 30 months of age."

A "Red Herring" to what Leo?

The hypocrisy of R-CALF members buying cattle that their chosen organization says are "supposedly unsafe"???

Kind of exposes them again does it not? Even the article contradicts itself, Bullard says no R-Calf members own cattle in Canada at this time then Debrucker says he does, they cannot even tell the truth to each other. I do know that Norm Haaland lost a lot of money, is that not what happens sometimes in business? I would even bet that Pat the GOD Goggins is still buying all of his feed for Vermillion, the Diamond Ring and all of the rest of his holdings from Canada. These guys are so inter-related and so entwined I would think they are from Arkansas. BTW, one of my neighbors went to the R-Calf benefit at PAYS, he said that Babe Goggins donated the heifer to begin with, bid herself up about 20 times, gave the heifer back, did the same thing all over again. Convenient way for Goggins to finance R-Calf with no one knowing

SH and SW-- Give us the dates of when these guys owned cattle in Canada -- Have they bought any since March 2, 2005? This is an old story being brought up because Canada and USDA has no scientific argument supporting importing Canadian cattle into the US......... Canadians screamed for years for US bucks-- Worth 1.55 on their dollar- sold out their entire industry to make a few more dollars-I've been there and had them almost drool over you to get real green money-- some US citizens invested in Canadian cattle, same as they have been for many years, then they tried to market them ( within Canada ) and were discriminated against because of their political or organizational backing - but we're supposed to take everything --just because......

Too me these investments are no different than taking any beancounters advice and putting your money down- win some, lose some- but these guys lost more because of the border not opening , because they stood on principle and science and not on their profits and all of a sudden the Canadians decide you had to be a member of the right party to participate-- Socialism all the way... What would have happened in the US if we had tried to block Vold Jones and Vold ( who own lots of cattle in the US) from taking them to market?.........

oldtimer=some US citizens invested in Canadian cattle, same as they have been for many years, then they tried to market them ( within Canada ) and were discriminated against because of their political or organizational backing

Did it ever occur to you that they had to get in line and wait, just like everyone else...till there was room in the packers for their cattle...A situation ironically caused by R-Calf...these people knew the risks
I guess you have a hard time with the truth..eh good luck..
Btw happy belated birthday(March 5 th) dicky boy.

HAHAHA!

Oh, I see, now we change the date to divert attention from the "UNSAFE" cattle that were purchased by R-CULT members prior to that.

THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING!!!!

Hahaha!

You R-CULTers are so pathetic.

No scientific argument supporting importing Canadian cattle huh????

HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE HAVE CANADIAN CATTLE IN THE U.S. ALREADY AND R-CULT SAYS OUR BEEF IS SAFE????

How about that little detail!

Nah, just drink the Kool Aid and disregard the obvious. Give that turbin another wrap OT. You are bought and paid for.

Is this senial judge in Billings blind, deaf and dumb? Could he not see whta R-calf was trying to do. Oh yeah I forgot he was busy counting his R-calf dollars in his chambers! Im hearing from a couple of the big feeders in Nebraska this morning there could be a "conflict" of interest on the presiding Judge in Billings on this case. Seems he had his mind made up before the hearing started.
