Rabbits!!

Tularemia Or Rabbit Fever
This disease, caused by Francisella tularensis is associated with rabbits and rodents. It was first formally recognized in 1911 in Tulare County, California in ground squirrels. It occurs in two forms, a glandular form affecting the lymph nodes and a more acute and severe typhoidal form affecting the entire body. In the first instance the organism enters through a scratch. In the second it is inhaled. The disease in man is characterized by high fever, painful, enlarged lymph nodes, chills, myalgia and malaise. On rare occasions it attacks the brain, heart and bones. Ticks are the most common method of spread of the disease from animals to man. When it is passed from direct handling of wild rabbit carcasses inflamed lesions are primarily on the hands. It can also be transmitted in undercooked meat consumed from infected animals.

UGGGGGGG sound painful

BEFORE I GET ATTACKED for being a rabbit lover......which I could care less about the critters to be honest.

I just posted this as a bit of information to help out and prevent anyone from getting sick by not knowing about this.

This is pretty common here in the South...that is the only reason I posted it.

Thank you!! No Attack here. I would hate to get "Rabbit Fever," I'll be aware and research it as well.

Thanks again

I just made my disclaimer as my tag name here seems to incite mini-riots @ times.

Oh...by the by.....grilled rabbit is EXCELLENT!!!!

Good Luck

Forgot to mention that we've tried roping them with twine and stabbing them with the pitchfork. That was interesting. Didn't get any, twine is hard to rope with almost got 'em with the pitchfork then thought of what that would actually look like and quit.

We invited a few friends over this weekend to shoot. No one will shoot with me, one friend, still claims I tried to shoot his foot. :? So, I'll set up the live traps. To be honest, not sure if I have it in me to hammer there heads in....may need help on that one....but I can sure set up the traps.

Any rabbit recipes are welcomed and anyone close enough for a rabbit dinner is welcomed....if you'll help me skin 'em.

I said I've tried roping them with twine....yes...tried...they never got away...they just never got caught....it's hard to rope with twine.

I'm working on pictures of this haybale, will have it up soon I hope.

Here's what waskilly wabbits can do:

Holy Smokes....... how long did it take'em to do that???

Sure those aren't ' man eaters'??? Those critters are hungry!!

We got them in November and it's been about a month that they've looked like that. The ground looks like a rabbit huch, little rabbit dropping every where. I'm figured I'd spare ya all the pictures of that

Wow.. I'm glad I can shoot a gun, mine haven't gotten that bad. But then I work on them a great deal. With the shot shell, one just points it in the general direction and when they get close to being in the sites, pull the trigger. You need to do something quick. Call your game and fish or county animal control agent, those things are costing you a great many $$$$. Gee with that many you could just point and shoot and hit many wabbits.

Posted your bale picture on some trees out on the north forty Our coyotes saw them and will be there shortly

As long as they stay away from the calves...eat only rabbits and prarie dogs...leave my dogs alone....don't howl all night....we might be able to work something out.....naw I changed my mind, I'll put up with the rabbits..... :D

I'm thinking of running a rabbit feedlot. Specialize in gourmet rabbit and rabbit fur coats :? :P

:D Yes that goes with the job, that business of feeding salad dressing on the hay bales. However my wabbits have been pruned down in population, as I don't believe its a healthy situation to leave a population uncontrolled. My girls get 'Cow Candy' dropped on top of the unrolled bale.

After seeing your picture Buckerette, I can't help wondering what's in your hay. Have you had a feed analysis done on it by any chance? I'm just thinking about something Dr. Albrecht said about cows not being as dumb as people think. A cow will stretch through razor wire to get to the most nutritious plants, she just knows what's good and what ain't. Maybe the cottontails are doin' the same thing. Not that this line of thinkin is gonna help get rid of the little curs, but I'm just real curious about the theory.

To get rid of them, why not call a few neighbours over on a weekend. Sort of a potluck where BYOB stands for Bring Your Own Buckshot!

Haven't had a feed analysis done on it. Kinda just eyeballed it, looks very good. Cow's seem to like it but not as much as our grass....and the rabbits don't seem to like the grass.

Shot 50 rabbits this weekend. Even I could have got some, they just stood there and let you take 5 or 6 shots on them. We really couldn't get any buy the hay pile, due to the house and cows being so close. Didn't get to work on the live traps either, but will get them up soon.

My old man used live traps when the squirels were buggin his garden and doing some damage to his trees. Used a cookie in the trap. Worked real good and i bet he trapped 100 of them....then he caught a skunk..stunk up the entire neighborhood.....had to call the law, they came out and shot it. thought that was a fluke, put the trap out again, 2days later, another skunk, mom made him get rid of the trap!
