I've got some buddies are virtuousos with a sixty footer-I have to stick to a 40' cause I can't hold my coils with a 60 foot. One of the most frustrating afternoons I ever spent was helping a recent graduate(lucky they didn't have a proficiency test) lol treat about a ton Maine Anjou cow. The only horse I had handy was about a thousand pound mare-i got a head lop on here fairly quick but this guy dinked around for a long time trying out his vaquerro loops-all the while his brother circled the deal on a quad-he finally ran about thirty cows between me and the cow and I had to turn loose. I chased her down on foot and dallied her to a willow clump but he wouldn't treat her there as it was the wrong way lol. I captured her again and told him to scoop up a pair of heels or I was pointing my pony home-he did and we got her fixed up. watching guys who are good at it is pretty amazing-not much you can't do with a good horse and a good rope.
Sounds like your friend was more into form than function.
Larry the Cable Guy could give him some words of wisdom.
