Sorry...not a picture story  Wouldn't be a good time to be crossing the Powder River now!

Bruce, the guy we lease from wants to redo the river crossing on his place (thank goodness). Got any good ideas for fencing across a river that goes from VERY high to VERY low??? Quite abit of 'stuff' comes down the river in the spring so needs to be something that won't collect alot of it then wash out. Any ideas are appreciated :)

Brother in law had to put in a "floater friendly" fence on the smith--a hi use recreational river---think it was a cable with dangling plastic pipes---looked wierd and he griped---but i think it let rafts and trash thru and held cows

Fish and game or nrcs probably got ideas.

Doesn't wash really...rocks don't wash lol. Some of the banks do wash, but it's not as big a problem as some areas. We wondered about something like that hanging fence.

We used to just build a corner on each bank, then put a gate across with baling wire to secure it. When a flood would come, the baling wire breaks, the gate swings downstream, and can be cleaned up and restrung. That works on low volume crossings that are subject to floods. A steel post can be set (shallow, so it comes up) in the middle if needed. That was when I worked where water flowed! Not much problem that way on this desert!

I got some cable you can't cut with a cable cutter, a good hacksaw blade will have its teeth gone in about 5 strokes, not sure what a really big bolt cutter would do, We use a torch. the boaters hate it because they can't cut it. Got a big coil.

I have the same problem on the river that goes through us high water is very rapid and by fall it is a glorifed stream I use any electric fence when the water drops but I would like to see some pictures of you guys fences to see if I could make something work as well

That is what I need!!! The rafters and tubers raise cain with mine. Guess I am going to have to go with a hotter fencer. I know if they grab the wire, their hair curls, but the batteries only last about 3 weeks.

Easy fix Nicky. All you need to do is buy each side of the river for as many miles as your cows can walk. Problem solved

have a cold one

i try to avoid "payback"---got one place where gate was either left open or fence cut on frequent basis. paved road dropped off hill on both sides---horrible spot. i put a sign on fence "black cows in this field--even if not in sight now--i can afford to lose one--but please--don't get somebody killed. shut the gate, come in and park--but cows might rub your mirrors off---

it's blm--and montana has river access law---somebody had also set up a shooting range there and was also leaving the gate open---i destroyed it, left my name and phone number and reasons why--and asking the party to contact me if he wished to discuss it. no problems since.
