Our little district lost three old pioneers this last few days. They all lived long productive lives and were great neighbors-the husband and wife passed a day or so apart from cancer and heart troubles and the other lady was going through alzeimer's. There aren't a lot of the old homesteaders left any more unfortunately.

They're a tough old breed who lived through some of the biggest changes humans have ever seen. My generation is probably the first one who won't have a longer life expectancy than our parents. Three funeral notices in our little post office last week, ages 50, 51 &52.

I agree it is sad to us who are left behind when an old pioneer passes. Being a good neighbor and having lived a long productive life is the best testimony to a life well lived. Due to age and illness, sometimes it's a blessing when they go home to a better place.

In this area, we lost several oldtimers here just before Christmas. It was hard on the families in a way, yet a relief too.

I can relate.... Since I always went with my dad all my friends growing up were old cowboys... Most have passed away and as I get older I truly miss them.. Oh the fun we had....Simple stuff really that only old cowboys could appreciate.
And a freckled face sun burnt nose girl.... I loved them....

while its sad when the old ones go,its sadder when there are no ''younger'' ones to take their place. our community also has lost its share of older folks lately who were the ''community'' now we are just a place to sleep for the people who work and live in the ''imminent doom'' to the west, (calgary)

But as long as a flicker of the cowboy spirit remains alive, cowboys will always continue! As long as there are ranches and horses and cattle, cowboys will still live! There are even pioneers today. Folks who love the traditions and still push the envelope of new technology in genetics and feed. As long as the sun sets in the west, there will be cowboys and cowgirls who hold fast to what it means to live the code of the cowboy. Buy to quote Chris LeDoux, "You just can't see them from the road"! :D LONG LIVE COWBOYS!!!!

I m 28 years old I lost my grandfather Nov 12 of 2010 . He always told me cowboys aren't a dying breed just a dam special one. amen to that
