Senate slips chicken into COOL farm bill provision

The Senate added chicken to its version of the country-of-origin labeling provision in the 2007 farm bill passed late Friday, even though nearly all chicken consumed in the United States is grown domestically.

"Chicken meat will be treated no differently than other cuts of meat under the law now," Majority Communications Director for the Senate Agriculture Committee Kate Cyrul told Meatingplace.com. The legislative language says "whole chicken, or in part."

The National Chicken Council did not oppose the amendment, spokesman Richard Lobb told Meatingplace.com. "It's getting to the point that there will be some poultry imported," he said, noting the recently signed free trade agreement allows Chile to export chicken to the United States. "And there are a number of other countries in the queue that sooner or later will get authorization."

Currently, "about 99.9 percent" of all chicken consumed in the United States is produced domestically. But with red meat COOL labeling on the horizon, Lobb said consumers might start wondering where the chicken they purchase came from.

In terms of what type of chicken meat might be imported, Lobb said it remained to be seen, but speculated frozen breast filets for further processed product might be possibilities.

I really believe much of that may come to be as it becomes market driven- after the folks can start making an informed choice in the grocery stores- and more reallize the extent of the imported stuff ...From what I'm hearing- some of it already is - with restaurants/eating places advertising they don't use imported or Chinese products, since the tainted/poisoned food scares....

This was an article back in May, so they are considering getting chicken from China.......... I'm beginning to wonder if they aren't trying to reduce the US population with these tainted products..... or...... is it that China threatens to sell off their US $$$ if we impose sanctions on their products? If its the latter, let em sell it off, tell the american people what's going on and we'll adjust.
 
Remember, there's still a way to go before the bill is on the presidents' desk.

And many changes are likely to happen before it gets there.

The COOL Bill is veto proof. The two differences is subsidys to growers as neither the House or the senate's bills talk the same. Then Bush could veto this portion of the farm bill.

Then don't bi**h, do nothing, and allow the chickenization of the industry to proceed. It's your choice.
 
As I have stated before Sandhusker, I dont believe that the NCBA, RCALF. LMA or any of the national organizations are good for much more than bi**hing. That is why I belong to a very well respected STATE organization, that gets alot more done and usually has both NCBA & RCALF calling asking for our help. That to me says my state organization is much better than any of the national groups.

I doubt that p$$ant state org you belong to is capable of representing the cattlemen on a national level,where it really counts,they just dont have the clout,new mexico dont have many cattle or cattlemen..............truth be known you are to cheap to participate, costs less to whine and let others do the work.

What successes have your organization accomplished, nenmrancher?

As I understand it, rcalf and NCBA are your national counterpart, and you should be able to do the state things on your own. What national items have your group accomplished other than the already known independence you exemplify?
 
Haymaker go blow somewhere else, you are just the typical Texan full of bull and little else. The state organization is well conected both in NM and on a federal level. As for what for what they have accomplished our group has worked on just about every thing from cool, which we support and have from the beginning, to NAIS. Our state group is one of the reasons that USDA started talking to the brand states about using brands as a part of the ID system. So I quess if I am a fence straddler because I find too many problems and way too much worthless ego in the national organizations than so be it. I have been called worse by lots better people than some nameless hack on a internet site.

This is why this board has gotten so boring, if you are not a die hard Rcalf person you are not allowed to have a opinion and are usually attacked repeatedly by no good for nothing texans. Elmo\Haymaker I will take that as just another bit of smelly texas hot air.

I still say that with RCALF\LMA on one side doing their damnedest to stop anything and everything that they see as change and NCBA\Packers on the other side of the issues with a full steam ahead change is good and no turning back attitude that nothing will ever get done. The thing that I really dislike about both sides is the its got to be my way or the highway attitude, there will never be anything accomplished with that kind of attitude.
