Pig Farmer is right. Stick with custom made and installed cabinets. You may find that they're even less money than the manufactured stuff. My wife found (on ebay) some antique lead glass from an old motel being torn down, and had it incorporated into the china cupboard, above one of the doors, and in a cabinet in her bathroom. You're only limited by your imagination.

Not sure if the poured countertops were worth it. Maybe they were. Pella windows were a ripoff, IMO. The Jacuzzi hardly gets used after the new wore off.

I agree on the windows you are paying for a name with a compromised product. Good looking cabinets as well as the trim around the door. The step up and outs do so much for the character of a kitchen.

Cal what is the height of your kitchen? Sure would like to see the rest of! it.

Ok we are looking at both Pella and Andersen windows.
Whats wrong with the Pella?

PF I had already heard that about the sheet rock. Going to make sure that it is not from China.

Cal LOVE those cabinets. :D I am looking at Craft Maid cabinets, semi custom made ones.

I've been in the building trade since 1984 the last new home I put paneling in was in 1986, but if you do put in paneling make sure you also install some wild colored shag carpet so the room can screem "1979" Just kidding. I would go all sheetrock and when if you still want some wood put it on over the sheetrock and when you get sick of it you can take it back out and you still have sheetrock. Something we've been doing for about 10 years now is doing one wall in large room with old weathered wood off of a barn or something like that.

As far as windows go I would take a good look at "VISIONS 3000" They are what I put in my house 15 years ago and had no trouble at all. Doing my dad's house right now and that is what he is useing also, any little thing that we did not like about them, has been change on the new ones.

Our house is log and all the walls are v-groove pine as are the ceilings. We also have wood floors through out the house. I'd like some tile in the bathroom at some point but I'm a cheap S.O.B. so it will likely stay the way it is for awhile. Our cabinets were custom made and are what they called "Rustic Oak" it has knots and wild grain in it not so boring as the veneer type lumber.I just let my wife decide on everything I could live in a camper.

I had never been around tile floors much, but when I cooked at that hunting camp last fall, they had tile floors in
the kitchen. I hated them, they were COLD and HARD. I'd NEVER
have tile in a kitchen after standing on those tile floors. they
were hard to clean too, I think perhaps the grout wasn't done
correctly as it stained.

And if I had tile in a bathroom, it would have underfloor heat. Tile is COLD.
FWIW

I LIVE 1 1/2 HOURS from the main crap maid plant. Along about 1999 or 2000 the founder of Kraftmaid Cabinets sold out his wife had major cancer. He started the company in his basement in middlefield Ohio. Once he acheived producing 1 million a year out of his basement he built his first plant.

I believe when he sold out the buildings covered 50 acres of surface area. he sold out for hundreds of millions of dollars to take care of his wife. He remained on the board and there was a clause in the selling contract that the purchaser had to maintain the same quality as the time of the sale.

Well in 2001 he had to sue the purchasers as the quality was in the pits. Every Saturday morning they have a surplus cabinet sale in lords town Ohio. These are actually cabinets returned because of defects and some damaged in transit.

On any given week the rejected inventory is about 100,000 cabinets.

I took a year off in 2001 and was over the design and quality department at a local home depot. Out of every order of Kraftmaid cabinets we sold and I inspected. I would return and reject 75 percent of the cabinets due to inferior workmanship. the owners son refers to the cabinets calls them crap maid cabinets now.

I Luv Herfrds you will be way ahead of the game to get custom cabinets built. The worst custom cabinets I HAVE EVER SEEN are better than Kraftmaid.

Here is something for you to consider about their quality and the product. All lumber is a commodity that is traded just like corn and beans. I can buy lumber for the same price as kraftmaid. Look at all of the people involved that make a profit off of factory cabinets.

The manufacturer, the trucking company, the seller, the installer and your state government. A custom cabinet shop should not be charging sales tax so that is 6 to 10 percent cheaper depending on your sales tax rate.

A good custom shop can easily compete and offer a better product if they are not out to gouge you.

here is something to consider I build custom cabinets out of oak cherry or hickory and charge about $325.00 per lineal foot for uppers and lowers combined. do the math I will try to post some pictures of my work and let you see what that buys you. No particle board or pressed wood. Raised panels on all open ends true raised panel cabinets fully adjustable shelves same wood inside and out the best hinges and drawer slides money can buy. solid wood drawer boxes.

Pella windows used to be the best now you are paying for the name as they have cut their quality.

I like the idea of getting custom cabinets. Only house we plan to build so may as well do it right.
I've looked at custom cabinet makers at home shows. Only trouble is the hubby sounds like a little bird "cheap cheap cheap." :D

I haven't read all pages....but to satisfy both parites. you could do a couple walls in wood, and a couple walls sheetrock. That way you can change the color of the walls...to go with changing decor over the years. And both are happy.

Or even just one main feature wall with wood.....and the rest sheetrock.

I really like those cabinets, too, Cal. They are different and that
leaded glass really makes them a stand out.

I'm curious about your remark about Pella windows too.
And what are your thoughts on Anderson windows?
What windows would you get if you could do it over?
The Pella windows seem drafty if you have a good wind, and you can feel quite a bit of cold around them when it's real cold outside, especially the sliders. We put some cheap Jeldwin vinyl windows in a rental house, and they actually move better and seem more air tight than the Pella's. I don't know what windows we should have used in our house, because we didn't research well enough and bought the Pella BS, hook, line, and sinker. Look at those big, odd shaped windows in my pictures at the high part of the wall. They're double payne, gas filled, and had to be replaced under warranty because they seperated.

Beautiful home, Cal. I really like the cabinets; love the ceiling (like WOW)
but I think that dog is SPECIAL.

Did you say he is Airdale, or Airdale cross? I WANT ONE!!
Thanks! The Airedale found something really rotten to roll in today, would gladly send her your way. :D

Thanks for letting us know that Cal. We are in a pretty windy area so that is a concern to us.
Guess we will be looking at the Andersen windows now.

I have a couple of Jeldwins in one of our rooms and I think the carpenter put them in wrong because the window does not seal all the way and you can really feel the cold coming in from them.

Cal great looking house. It looks like you took your time and gave a lot of thought as well as enjoyed the experience.

Everything really comes together. Someone did the right thing on the right of the sink and got plenty of drawer space.
