You will need to keep a hays stack handy at least part of the year on that small an acreage. To cake and grass you ought to have about 40 acres / pair. Cake is a range cube 2-3 inches by 3/4 inch that is fed on the ground where ever the cattle are. It is a protien pellet that actually feeds the bacteria in the rumen so that the animal better utilizes the roughage she consumes. Our locally grown hay is sweet stalk that is high in energy, but not too high protien, so a protien supplement like cake is in order for lactating cattle until the grass greens up. The home and cattle facilities on that place are great. Hate to lose the Baileys as neighbors, but sounds like we'll be gaining new good neighbors.
