Be an A'I' tech -today would be a great day to get some on the job training-it's 30 F here with blowing wet snow and there are 35 synchronized cows to be bred after supper. I'd be more than willing to step back and let someone gain some experience lol. The worst A'I' days I've had before were 210 cows in one shot in plus 100 and 150 grain overloaded heifers in a driving rainstorm. There had been a feedtruck mix up two days before and every heifer that day hads firehose diarrhea-it was on the verge of nasty.
 
jeeez..... And I thought I was getting tired of A.I.ing after 70 head. I have to admit that warm crap running down your neck is comforting in the cold..... for a few seconds. Much better than a wet swat from a tail. I have my cows on fall rye now and they can shirt through the eye of a needle at forty paces.....definately using less lube.
 
50-100 at a crack is just about right-those 250 head days get hard on the back-I'm lucky most A'I crews I work with are pretty good-no blue heelers-I put the prod batteries in upside down first time somebody turns their back. The best crew are my kids-they sort their buckes and don't even use a sorting stick. I guess hearing 'Go sort those yearlings' since they were six might have something to do with it lol.
 
I feel so bad for you NR. We have a bunch lined up for the end of the month/ first week of June, that sweet green grass sure cuts down on the lube. I actually like it when there are so many all I have to do all day is breed every second or third one. I think the most we ever bred in a day wa 450, I think this year could change the record. What do city people say when you tell them that you make your living arm deep in a cows butt days on end? Or you tell them that you spent your day with your mouth a couple inches away from a cows butt putting semen where it belongs? Just thought I would ask, have not heard any real good stories from you in a couple of days.
 
Well when I tell them I make Dr's wages doing it -they usually back off-I can usually A"I alot of cows and keep pretty clean doing it-it's all in the angle of the elbow lol. After ten thousand or so cows you start to learn a few tricks lol.

Some havegot what it takes it for sorting and the rest, well . . .

I have kids that, without a stick or cane, can use their hand and fingers to practically point the animal to where they or I want it and I have a son that is better off just running the gate! I think no less of him - he can work and repair machinery like nobody else around here can.

Each has their talents and gifts.
 
The large local dairy (3,000 cows ) is looking for a good AI person - - - the one they just fired had a first time conception rate of 7%

The man before him was gitting between 30% and 40% first time but he started his own dairy about 75 miles away.

These cows have computer tracking devises that tell the computer what the cows temp has been over the last 12 hours each time they go in for milking, how much milk each milking, and other things.

What would a good conception rate be in these conditions???? These cows are very well cared for. Top feed at all times, plenty of fresh water, top people trying to care for thier every need.

I just got the young man who shoes horses a job there - - - He goes in every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:30 and trims cattle un till noon. Good facilities and tools - - -all he needs is knowledge and the willingness to do a good job.
 
Ok, question??? Don't you clean the poop out of the anal tract first??? I would rather have them loose than haypacked..
George, Sounds like a dream job to me.... Heat detection is NO 1 in my books......
Can I ask what is the range for AIing fees are? I AI for others and I don't charge them for the ones I don't get bred.
 
I usually don't clean it out-I find by the time you get it all pulled out the cows are straining and gassing up-alot easier to just work around it if it's not too hard.As for charging I don't have a set rate-it depends on volume-whether they buy their semen from my company etc.
 
So elwapo, How many years do you call experiance??? 8) That's interesting NR.... Must be a northern thingy.... It's taught down here, and I don't know of anyone who doesn't....Very seldom do I have the gas. It's just easy...Kinda a slam dunk..... Thanks for sharing....
 
I have be no means anywhere close to the experience nr has( I have been at it for 5 years) The heavy hay manure is not easy to work around.
 
It just slows me down-I can usually have a cow threaded and bredded in the time it takes to clean out-plus it's alot cleaner-I usually have their vulva wiped clean and my gun in before the poop starts to shoot. Well I hope you never have one gas up like a stovepipe it's not much fun.
 
I have been taking an et course at the vet school this week.. talk about stove pipes... We are using the second and third year vet student palpation cows with a lot of inexperienced people mucking around.. not a good time... well in the cows at least the course has been good though
 
WEll reach in and grab a fold in the rectal wall and give it a little tug-then prepare for a fart of outstanding velocity,duration and decibel level-but your stovepipe will be gone. Nothing like the look of panic the first time someone hits one A'I'ing lol.
 
When we were doing the flushes today we had a stomache tube rigged up to suck up any extra air... that was fun to act as a tech on that one, it worked really well I just felt like a moron. Yesterday one of the demonstrators got sprayed from one of my cows after three hours of palpations she had had enough... Today he stayed in the office and I tried to get him back in there... somehow being clean was more appealing
 
I was ok with the no fighting... it was the other 30 people in before me, she wanted nothing to do with anyone anymore! We were just palpating and doing ultra sound the first couple days today was a little more my style with the actual catheters
 
Is there anything more agrivating than a cow in heat? wore out a horse this morning trying to pen and breed one. Hey northern bucker ..... does chasing a cow for a few miles through everything from fences to sloughs effect the catch rate when inseminating ?
