My gelding came up with a quarter size scald on his wither after a verrrry long branding. The sore was not serious and I have since changed pads and switched horses, but there is now a golf ball size bump which seems loose inside and causes pain to touch. Any suggestions other than time ?

I forget what that is called, perhaps a 'set fast.' You might need to have it cut out. I'm glad you changed horses and quit riding this one. As you mentioned those places are very sore.

I'd look under my saddle and see what I could find. Something had to have caused that. Jinglebob could tell you better how to find what is causing the problem than I could. Try feeling with your hand, pushing very firmly on the spot on the saddle that coordinates with that spot on the horse. You should be able to feel something.

No doubt that spot will grow in white, too.

Probably where a screw bubbled the rawhide on the tree, where they screwed the rigging on.

Could be lots of things, mane hair under the blanket, bad spot on the blanket, bad blanket, etc. What causes people to get sores on their feet? Very similar.

By the way. For all of you who always use two blankets or pads. Do your boots fit better with two pair of socks on?

OHHHH, JB, you have touched on a pet peeve of mine.

I see so many horses overpadded and that is MUCH WORSE than
underpadding a horse. The saddle moves way too much with too
many pads and makes the backs sore.

I talked to a man that worked in a kill plant once and he told me
a person wouldn't believe what they find in horses backs once they
are skinned. It is terrible according to him.

You can't beat wool next to your horses back.

Thanks for your comment.

There is a cream you can get from a Vet. I forget what its called but a vet would know.
I also know that if its bad vets have to cut into the sore like Faster Horses said.

checked the saddle .....seems OK. It is the same saddle I have been using for years. I did way too much roping and dragging that day so the sore is my fault. I had one pad on that I had used with this saddle many times. Thanks for the input

Something was not fitting right. Maybe your saddle sliped out of place during the roping?
If your saddle is in place and actually fits the horse there is no reason for saddle sores.
