Cattle are sure looking good. You don't have much snow. Is it farther north in Minnesota that usually gets more snow.

Were in the central part seems farther south gets more as its not quite so cold there. They have more north also but were in a drought here.I dont like snow so this is more than enough. We will get our turn with lots of snow I hope its not this year though.

Good looking cattle, Denny. Seeing those babies gets a guy kinda excited about calving, but not for a while yet around here, please.

Lotsa bacon in the makin' too!

Do you ever have trouble with finding the calves in that brush?

Yeah the brush is pretty thick If they go out in a ways you just as well wait for them to bring the calf out.We are moving them tomorrow to our farm better corrals and no so many hideing spots....We are missing an old cow I'm sure she's out there some place but I cant find her coyotes will.

Nice pics Denny!

Cows look to be in good shape for the cold you've been having.

That gal walking away looks to be pretty close herself.

-15 below and their not in a barn, head to the brush and have a live calf. I like the heck out of that! It was -30 here last week and we put some in the barn but couldn't get them all in. What you have there is mothering ability and thats not something you can buy in a sale ring. If the wind isn't blowing and the barn isn't insulated it doesn't matter if you have them in or not. Of the 6 calves I tagged last thursday that were born in the barn 5 had frozen ears, i'm not sure why the other didn't.

Nice looking cattle. Yesterday was our first day to have 24 hours that stayed above 0. Not much snow here either. With 4 feet of frost in the ground snow now won't help us anyway. Since most of our weather comes from the Northwest how about sending us a week of 50 degrees. :)

Denny, what are your night time lows temperatures this time of year? Low enough for a few short ears, or not so bad?

Its been bitter cold for about 3 weeks yeasterday we had 20 above at 6 am got near 40 right now we have 15.We do get some with short ears trick is not to tag them for a few days an oldtimer says they keep them better if you wait but anything after 3 days I cant run that fast.

I check cows by the wind and tempature it can be pretty cold with no wind and the calves will get going quite well.As it is I don't night check very often the cattle are 12 miles from home.

These are all 1st calf heifers I check cattle twice a day once after the bus leaves in the morning and before dark if it is bitter cold then I will run up at midnight.Mothering ability is my number one goal because I dont have the leasure of living where the cattle are.We need to sell our place here and build a new house at one of our properties or maybe buy another place lots of dreams lack of cash.

We finally got blessed with a 45 or something degree day yesterday. Very warm and the snow is starting to melt.. Lots of bare areas but still lots of places with 2 feet or more of drifts... The walk I went for yesterday was a real peach sogging through those drifts.

IL Rancher, we must be enjoying the same weather system as you right now. For the first time in over a month, we are sitting even at the freezing mark this morning. Relatively mild and no wind.

The cows are enjoying it immensly - breaking trails through the field where they haven't been all winter.

The whole countryside just seems to sort of relax and bask in the sunshine.

Yep.. It had been close to a month since we had been above freezing... Now we wait for the first low that is above freezing. That is always nice. The only problem we have now is going to be the mud. A warm rain could actually fix that by breaking through the frost line but it is going to take a lot of days for the frost to get out of the ground.. Only a high in the mid 30's today because we have clouds and a little misting but it is still nice.

Saturday is forcasted for 24 hours above freezing and Sunday is forcasted for 50... Going to have to get a boat out to check on the cows probably, lol.

Spring is almost here.

Oh... And to add to the Spring is almost here... Two more signs.

1) The geese are startting to show up.. Not many, but am starting to see them in fields.. Might be coming out from Chicago area where some winter but we don't see them in that many numbers out here during the winter.

2) robins... They are here.

now, when the Red Wing blackbirds start showing up and sigining in the marshes/swamp pasture than it will truely be spring.,
