They are bullsnakes much to our glee as where we now keep our horses they could be either.

I wasn't about to get out and didn't have a shovel. There were three of them. I'm a HUGE chicken when it comes to snakes.

It was actually a moment right off of animal planet. While driving over there I could tell something was up because of watching Sunny. I told the kids I bet it was snakes. Little did I know it was snakes mating (or at least I assume that is what they were doing). Two of them were twisted up together and when we drove off one took off and then the other two started in. I'd never seen that before. :shock:

I had a hard time getting out to get the horses even after they had slithered away. :oops:
 
I was cleanin around the house one time....gettin some dewberry vines away from the edge of the concrete slab.......usin a hoe......thank goodness..lol cuz as I was choppin vines, and draggin dirt away. I flipped up two copper heads that were entwined like that....holy cow talk about jump high and squeal!!!!! But at least I already had my weapon of choice in my hands. LOL
 
You can do what ya want but i'd suggest not killing them. In this area bull snakes will kill or run off rattler's plus they are gopher killing machines. This is coming from a fella who hates snakes more than pretty much anything! :D

We have been told two stories.

One is if there are bull snakes around there won't be rattlers because the bullsnakes take care of the rattlers.

Two is that one isn't true.

Red touches "Black - Poisons Lack"
Corral Snakes
Red Touches "Yellow - can kill a fellow"

Bullsnakes eat small mammals, such as mice, rats, large insects, as well as ground nesting birds, lizards, and the young of other snakes. Juvenile bull snakes depend on insects, small lizards and baby mice.
(The idea that bull snakes occasionally eat rattlesnakes is sometimes touted as a reason for humans not to harm bull snakes when encountering them in the wild, although a better reason is the bull snake's role in controlling warm-blooded vermin such as rodents. Note that many snakes have a natural immunity to venom, just as rattlesnakes themselves are immune to their own. Some venomous snakes are being reaserched for the already antivenin inside their bodies to be used for medical purposes.)

Though some bull snakes can be docile, and with some time become accustomed to handling, most bull snakes are quite defensive and known for their perceived "bad attitude".
When threatened by anything as large as a human, a bull snake's primary defense is to flee, if possible.
Bullsnakes are often confused for rattlesnakes and killed by laypersons. Due to its coloration, dorsal pattern, and semi-keeled scalation; the Bullsnake superficially resembles the Western Diamondback Rattler (Crotalus atrox), which is also common within the same range. The bull snake capitalizes on this similarity by performing a very impressive rattlesnake impression when threatened. First, it hisses, or forcibly exhales through a bisected glottis, which flaps back and forth producing a very convincing "rattle" sound. It will also take on a rattlesnake-like "S-curve" body posture, as if it is going to strike. The bull snake will commonly vibrate its tail rapidly amongst the brush or leaves, and flatten its head to make it take on a more characteristic triangular-shaped head of the rattlesnake. These defensive behaviors are meant to scare away threats, not sound an attack.
In contrast to rattlesnakes, which usually keep their tail elevated in order to sound the most efficient rattle, bull snakes tend to keep their tail in contact with the ground, in order to beat it against something to make a sound.
Their rattlesnake mimic is so impressive that it is frequently the bull snake's very undoing when discovered by humans.
Bullsnakes customarily kill their prey by constriction before consuming it.
 
Tis the season for snakes that's for sure...I've seen 3 rattlers so far this last week in the same spot, so I'm guessing there's a den nearby...I can go for months and never see one, so this is an unusual june anyway, so maybe that' why I'm coming across them...I did get 1 run over with the pickup, but the other 2 slithered away..I am scared to death of those things!

Yup...........and cows,last one we had snake bit, aborted her calf and lost a good chunk of her nose.

PS Where was your shotgun Cattlearmy,you are supposed to keep one handy,altho I agree those wernt the shooting kind,but a big ole bull snake can scare the hale outa you,dont think those big ones wont get after you.
 
S0-o-o-o, here I am - sitting here reading about Rattle Snakes, and seeing pictures of Rattle Snakes, and having creepy feelings running up and down my spine, and trying to comb my hair down on the back ofmy head - - AND - my dear, sweet, wonderful black and white Tuxedo Cat ru-u-u-b-b-b-s-s-s up against my leg, and I ended up on top of the Computer desk holding the Mouse in my hand like an AX!!

Well, I am not really so good OR spry! On May 14, I experienced a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack), which was a slight stroke. Then, three weeks later, I had another one, and this time it resulted in my seeing double images because it affected the 6th Cranial Nerve (Abducens). As a result, I am wearing a Black Eyepatch, hollering "Yo Ho Ho, Avast Me Hearties, Ship Ahoy, Walk the Plank " and something about Rum and Dead Men's Chests. My Ophthalmologist says that usually the eye will normalize on it's own within a couple of months! I certainly pray so! My Neurologist says that the Two HOURS of MRI's that they performed tell them that I am "healthy as a horse", and that he has no idea why I had this happen to me! Wonderful! :???:

In the meantime, I can't drive, play Table Tennis, read very much at a time, and keep imagining that my cat is a Rattlesnake! But I have a lot of Faith that I will recover my abilities in a few weeks. I am losing a little weight, lowering my blood pressure just a little
bit, and lowering my cholesterol a little bit, even none of those things are out of line very much for 83 years of age.

But the Snakes don't help my Blood Pressure very much! :shock:

Anyway, any prayers will be appreciated very much!

Boy oh boy, I am loving that I live in central Alberta NO SNAKES here.. :P

I ran over a bull snake that was laying across the highway. His head was over the middle yellow line and his tail was over the white line on the shoulder of the road.
It felt like I hit a speed bump. No I didn't get out to pick it up because I figured all I did was tick it off.

I sure will be praying for you Doc,keep you chin up......you will be good as new in a few days,had a little bout with bad health myself a couple weeks ago,nothing like yours,cracked a few ribs when my horse pitched me off.
Im betting you got good doc's and are payin attention to them,kinda strange that could'nt pinpoint the cause................good luck
