Went through the Morrison Meadow bunch the last two days. Yesterday we sorted the 3rd calf and older red cows out to add the the home bunch. Last fall we cleaned house on close to 100 older cows that were becoming time consuming to calve out. These will get the home herd back to what our range permit allows on this side.
Of the 92 we sorted out, 78 of them were 4 year olds.
The black 4's and older were sorted into another field to go back to Morrison Meadow this summer as we still have a few SimxRA bulls and try to avoid greys. There are still a handful of blacks in the home herd but they are range broke to their summer pasture and it's not worth the effort to change their habits.

Up the alley to the chute.

That bunch done.

Today we sorted heifers from second calvers and a few suspected twins.
The heifers got their permanent cow tags along with their vaccination.

Heading for the corrals.

Looks like another project well done gcreek. Doesn't look like you've been skimping on the feed this winter either.
Boy, there's a lot of those younger reds that would look awful nice a few hundred miles north!

It was almost July here today. Got to 58F/14C for a couple of hours this afternoon. Settled the snow down to make room for what we are supposed to get on Wednesday.

Silver, those reds look fine right where they're at. Come down in the fall and sort some heifer calves off. :D
Either our bales a way heavier than they've ever been or the mild winter didn't take so much fuel to stay warm but these cattle aren't eating what they should be. Not that that's a bad thing.

They sure look good, Gcreek. Great shape!

Do you ever had troubles with aborts from running the cows through your chute system so close to calving?

Thanks.
Very seldom, with just the two of us here we take our time and try to avoid any pile-ups or ramming around. It is a lot easier on everyone involved.

How's calving going on the river?

Dave, you still haven't finnished that barn have you!
looks like yer cows will make it to spring now.

snow gone here........river wide open and lower than it was all last year.

frost is pretty much gone.........a little wheat gettin put in around here.

Things are sure looking good up there! Nice that you have room to sort before calving. We have to sort our color/breeding groups at branding which is kind of a pain.

Really well, thanks. Nothing too crazy and we've had enough twins to cover the screw ups

Hope all goes well on your end too.
