To Reagan-

Today, I saw the measure of compassion.
I saw a lot of kids just going with the flow and idling along,
Smiles and laughs as they cleaned up pens,
Without a care and nothing was wrong.

And that is perfectly fine, of course.
Another stockshow is over and done.
But what touched my heart was a single young lady, With tears in her eyes,
and not because she had won.

She's the cream of the crop, with a lamb or a steer. Has lots of trophies and buckles for proof.
She could easily show just about any critter
If it had a hide and a hoof.

But this girl had just taken her lamb from its pen, And through the sale ring.
And i have no doubt she sold it well
And the check would make any heart sing!

But her heart wasn't happy, because that meant goodbye, To a partner and a pal.
That long last walk, with a lamb or a steer,
Made a heartsick little gal.

And i wanted to just give her a hug.
And i wanted to hold her up high!
Because she cares and she loves and she hurts And it all could be seen in her eyes,

And her cheeks and the front of her shirt.
She truly loves her lambs and her steers.
And that moment to me was priceless for sure,
Worth more than a handshake and cheers.

One little lady showed what ranching's about
And it followed me home from the show.
And tonight when i chored and saw our own empty pen, I had to write this so Reagan would know,

I feel about like you do sis,
And i'm so proud of you for giving a damn.
We need more kids who love what they do
And not show for the glitz and the glam.

I've got to watch you grow up in the ring
When you started out you were just small.
But today, even though i'm still bigger than you,
I've never seen someone, stand as tall.

Never quit caring amigo,
Never stop loving each one.
Buckles will fade and ribbons get lost
But the memories stay when you're done.

That empty pen should always hurt
If it don't then our hearts are of stone.
Tears should be shed when we lead them away, And then have to turn and come back up alone.

Great old-style cowboy poetry and I love it. I would suggest you do reading, but most cowboy poetry readings have been taken over by college-educated small acreage horse people and the old style is being replaced with meter and smooth fancy meaningless words that totally lose the feel. It is great poetry, just not a cowboy. Keep your poetry coming as I look forward to it.

Have you ever gone to Elko to the cowboy poetry gathering? We went in 2018. This poem is good enough to be recited there.

The best one I heard there was by a young lady from Jordan Valley Oregon. Her family includes some pretty good bronc riders. She has a sister married to one of the lesser known Wright brothers. She said that her father said the stock contractors are breeding broncs so we are breeding bronc riders. The poem had a line saying the 3 year old nephew's stick horse had spur marks in its neck. Picturing that was one of the high lights of our trip for me.

I've been out to Elko several times to the gathering, but not to perform. It's fun for sure. Thanks for the kind words. But Elko is much deeper water than I am used to swimming in. They'd laugh me out of town I reckon
