Soapweed, looks like your herd survived the storm

nature's artwork may be pretty in January, but certainly not in late March

Sounds like the next storm system is going to dive towards the "4 Corners Region" and then move NE, right towards my neck of the woods. When I saw winter storm watches up for western Kansas, I thought "oh crap".

Soapweed, so happy to see you made the storm okay. You sure got dumped on!. Sunshine is a welcome sight after a night like you had!

Glad all is well! The drift pictures are awesome!!!

When I worked in Neb. the guy I worked with was from S.Dakota. He wanted to know if I had ever seen snow pile up on fenceposts...he never had :?

Those ol' trees sure did their job for ya.

It is amazing how much better trees are for a windbreak than man-made materials. The bunch that went through the storm up next to that old barn with some steel windbreak didn't fare nearly as well as the cattle that were in the protection of good cedar tree shelterbelts.

Thank God for shelterbelts. Most of the trees in this part of the country have been planted by man. Still they are a Godsend. In this storm you could hardly feel the wind in front of the shelterbelts.
Soapweed, it looks like you got more snow then I did. by the looks of the ice clinging to the critters, you must have had more rain too.

I had a few new calves but they faired alright. I didn't feed until after 5 Pm. when the wind started to go down. The cattle were all situated out of the wind. Sometimes if you disturb them you do more harm then good.

Nicky, I have only seen snow pile up on fence posts one time during my lifetime. This was in November and we got 17 inches. My brother and some friends were deer hunting, we wondered if they would get back home, but the snow was still soft so everything turned out ok.

Sure glad to see that you made it through o.k.! Thanks for packin' a camera. This goofy website does funny things. I found myself WORRIED about all of you Dakotan's and Nebraskan's as the storm headed toward ya! I havent met one of ya in person, eye to eye, but we sent up a couple prayers in your behalf! Take care! :D

Thanks, leanin' H. I like my computer because all my friends live in there. :-)

I think you got more snow than we did Soapweed,,,all our snow ended up in drifts too,,the meadows are bare, and it did close the road in a few spots...We had a couple of calves wander off, but found them today and only had 1 calf die, so we were lucky too. I hope we never have to withstand that wind again,,,but I'm sure we will since we live in Nebraska..lol Pretty photo's though...thanks

That storm was a bugger! I found four dead ones today....one would have croaked anyway, one trampled into the mud, and two born in a fairly short time span when we couldn't get to the ones that hadn't been sorted off as heavy. Found four more that were between two rows of bales that were drifted under with just a little air hole, could hear muffled calf bawling, so got them dug out and lifted out of there.

Someone said something about 80 mph wind gusts at RC Regional Airport, I don't think we would have been too far behind that.

I feel for you guys Cal. That wind was horrible. One bunch of my cows left the shelter and spent the storm in the corner of the pasture. If I would have had any calves then I wouldn't have any left, if you know what I mean.

One thing that is very appreciated in this modern day and age is the weather forecast. It is nice to be able to get cattle into protected areas ahead of the storm, instead of floundering around out in a blizzard trying to get cattle situated after the fact.

I'd like to third that motion. We feel for the work and loss and pain and it really makes us appreciate that it could always be worse. I am still intrigued with the Sandhills but think it is every bit as harsh as we have it here. Thanks for the education.
