Storm pictures Part Two, March 24, 2009

It is supposed to blow in here this afternoon until Fri Afternoon. I just got in from getting everything behind the breaks, and well fed. As prepared as I know how, should be able to weather it ok if it ain't too too bad. We got several new ones yesterday, and still popin' this am. Like ya say Soapweed, thank God for the degree of accuracy the weatherman has today.

A 100 years ago going from a 75 degree day to a full blown blizzard the next day would have been quite a humbling experience I bet. But I suppose the warning signals like the strong south and southeast winds like we had would at least give you a clue back them that something was brewing. That's why I enjoy reading about the history of the pioneers to see how they handled the tough times and maybe learn something in the process.

I hope you get some moisture, but not too severe :D ! It's been snowing here most of last night and all day. About 9-10 inches so far with more on the way! Wish it was warmer though, only 15 degrees. Hope it's not too bad for you and your calving cows :-).

Boy do I feel for you folks... :( :(
Altho we're usually colder than a brass monkey up here on the border- we get far less of those spring blizzards then you folks south...It just seems historically they go toward southern MT, Wyo, SD, and Nebraska...We call them South Dakota calf killers for that reason...

But I have been thru a few... The worst we had I think was in the first week of May- and killed a lot of almost month old calves...

Temp finally warming a little here- 30 degrees right now, with the sun shining- and the wind has dropped down to 10 mph (which almost feels non-existent)... Got about a half inch of snow during the night- but with the sun shining its all melted off....

The clearing skies is supposed to bring us temps down around 5-10 tonight- but at least the bitter wind may be past us...Maybe if warm up comes I can get my calf taxi/warming box passenger side of my pickup cleaned good enough Grandma will ride with me again.....

Faster Horses just go to your local library, they will have dozens of books, many written by homesteaders that will give you the sense of what those people went through to survive in this unforgiving country that we still live in. One that comes to mind is a book about the people who settled in the Badlands of South Dakota. Can't remember the name of it but the ones that lasted were some tough suckers for sure.

One book that I can remember the name of is "The Badlands Fox" by Pete Lemly. Great read.

One book may be "The Childrens' Blizzard" about a storm that hit during unseasonably warm days when kids had gone to school mid-winter without proper warm clothing. Many died trying to get home. Some were kept in the school. Lots of tragic stories. Possibly 1880 or so.

Lots of lives lost in SD in 1949 and 1952 blizzards, too. One family not far from mine died when their old jeep quit trying to get home from school with the kids, I believe. I was pretty young and very fearful of storms.

Modern equipment helps a lot these days.

We've been quite lucky with the winter storms, so far. Pretty cold and windy, but not much moisture. Very little snow.

Thoughts and prayers for all of you who are having it so tough.
