Strange Winter

Ty's been riding some young horses and has jumped a few bucks-the whitetails still are packing both horns-never seen them carry this late-mulies do lots of times but usually whitetailds are dropped by January. Were only about ten percent of normal moisture and other than one cold snap been pretty nice so far. After last couple cold ones it's a nice change. The grass cattle are goiing to the feedlot in case it doesn't rain.
 
I bet our deer are taking a beating this winter the snow is hard enough the baby calves can walk on top. I bet the wolves are haveing an easy time with the deer.
 
Our deer yard up in the winter so unless you go looking you don't see them much here. Back in 95 a friend went out to the yard area he knew of looking for shed's he counted 45 deer carcasses they were all wolf kills they just stayed there all winter eating at will.Pretty poor hunting for a few years after that winter.
 
just a couple weeks ago, i seen a whitetail still supporting his head gear. they say a heathly deer will shed the latest. but this is getting pretty late. :?

I used to call them horns when I was a kid! My Dad had enough and gave me whipping "so I'd remember they were NOT horns. They are Antlers!"
 
There dropin fawns in south fla. Will be doin it here soon. Turkey season's next month. But it sure is cold still. The wind blowin 90 to nothin. Our march wind is the worst. Watermellon vines catch hell. Eveybody's talkin about plantin later than normal because the ground's so cold. They plant on plastic mostly. I'm talkin about settin out plants. Its a sure nuff poker game just gettin a good crop. Then the sellin part turns into blackjack.

So are you just on the west side of the wetter zone NR? I read that a line drawn north to south through North Battleford was the western boundary of the better moisture area - you must be right on that line?
It is scary, scary dry here - nothing short of a miraculous moisture and growing season will pull it out of the hat for most around here. We have had lots and lots of fog which is unusual - how much stead to folks put in the lore that rain follows the fog?
It's certainly been an pleasant winter with lots of mild weather that has really stretched the feed pile.
