We've got a cow, she's about 9, and has a calf. Every evenin when I'm out there, she's bellerin and walkin like she's lost her calf. Seems she parks her calf on one side of the pasture, and travels with the other cows to the far side of the pasture on the opposite side. Then commences to bellerin and walkin. The calf also walkin and bellerin sometimes. We were talkin about it the other evenin while watchin her. She aint frantically lookin for it, just calmly walkin along and bellerin. Mr Lilly and I decided that she's either the stupidest cow, or she's the herd Teacher in "How to locate yer calf 101"

We had a cow do the same thing a few yrs ago.

She had beautiful bull calf and it got to where we'd just got in the Ford farm truck...and pick him and bring him back to her every evening. It was quicker to do that than to listen to her for hrs on end...and the calf seemed to like the ride!!!

It just became easier and a routine for everyone.

We named the bull calf FORD!!

Well this lil calf aint gittin a ride. She eventually finds it ever time, and they have this......"Great reunion" ( you know the one, get within site of one another and start runnin, then when they meet up, she's all sniffy sniffy licky licky ) it's so funny to watch. Wouldn't be funny tho if you didnt know that she does it ever day.

Way to go Lilly on them coyotes. :D We've had a cow do that a time or two and we just let them figure it out.....Seems like the more you interfear the worst it gets. Plus it may upset the other cows if you intervine. Good Luck and let us know how you turn out.....
Lilly how close are the fires to you??

Borger, Tx is in the panhandle....almost 600 miles to the north west. Awful fires up there right now. Wish them folks could get some rain too.
Our burn ban has been lifted here, and the Nat'l Forest has been doin alot of controlled burns in the woods. We've got some real nice rains recently, so glad to get em too.

I hope the calf gets a little older and starts to stay with the herd.

Glad you are getting a little rain - - - we had rain every day last week and then 3' friday night. No rain since Saturday, with the rain friday night I had to put in a culvert in the main entrance to the gravel pit today. I've been here since 1973 and this is the first time i've had a road wash out.

I guess it could be worse, about 100 miles south of here they got it really bad.

I seen this a few times - in most cases I figured out the "calf'" was hard of hearing or Deff

This kind of calf does not hear the heard moving off - can not hear the Cow and just goes looking and looking.

This old :cboy:'s way takes time to just sit and study them and a Good Eye to note the calf action - it hard to see when they are with other animals - - Seperate it - get behind it or out of site and make a loude Noise and see what happens or Just live with it :!:

All the time your Thinking (Dumb Cow) or (Dumb Calf) the calf is learning to move with the heard leaving me to wonder "Who's Dumb" Here :!:

If I see or Hear Hoof Beats I don't think Zebras or in this case Dumb!
I study them and figure out why.
Call it :cboy: Smarts

I had not thought of this - - - I can see where this might be the case and the calf could learn to over come his problem.

I never go a day without learning something.

I was at the sale barn in Amarillo today and heard some horrifying stories. Sunday's fire burned 750,000 acres and maybe up to 12,000 head of livestock. We need rain in the worst way!

]yes george i am about 140 miles south of you or so and we got 8 inches in 2 days. You couldnt light a fire here without some old tires and some gas. But the grass is really a growin not much good at this stage i guess it would be all water?Do you know of the paddock trucking company i used to work with them guys a lot.

Ya know, I got a cow in today to give her a shot because she hadn't cleaned. She also had one hell of a time keeping track of her calf. I noticed when I got her in the chute that her eyes were getting cloudy on the surface. So no wonder she couldn't keep track of her calf, she could hardly see it.

Give her a vitamin A shot, she might lose the cloudiness, but not a guaranteed thing. Had a set of twins last year, developed cloudiness in their eyes, gave them Vit A, cleared them right up. It's funny, tho, only those twins were deficient in Vit A, maybe the mother doesn't eat mineral as the mineral has plenty of Vit A in it. You can't force a cow to eat mineral, I just assumed they all did and maybe my assumption is wrong!

You guys take care in Texas...Has anyone heard from our own TXTibbs??
Are they planting anything in Indiana yet??? I know you have had a ton of rain, but has that affected the planting yet???

I hope the dry areas get some moisture soon.

No we are not planting in Indiana yet but we normally don't get started till the first of april - - - - this is the fourth day with no rain so we are starting to firm up but rain is forcast for tomorrow. I just hope it is not another 3 to 5 inch downpoor. I have lived here since 1971 and this is the first time the main drive to the gravel pit washed out. We had about an inch every day for a week followed by 3 inches in an hour.

You're right Hanta Yo, and if she'd consumed mineral like she was supposed to she probably wouldn't have had a problem cleaning.
