It tends to be my luck in the vulnerable tubing position for the calf to let out one of those pi$$ed off bawls and then be fending momma off. I usually opt to have a gate between me and the cow.
 
Us too.
A old cowman friend of ours maintained those big calves took too
long being born, was short of oxygen in the birth canal and that is
partly why they take so long to get going. I wasn't sure he was
right, but he could be. Their own weight hinders them too.
The little calves seem to be able to jump up and go!
