Tagging and freeze branding replacement heifers

Local outfit around here buys latex paint that is mixed wrong/ugly color, etc. They paint the back end of their heifers & cows with it. Go down the tail head and both hips following the lay of the hair. It's an inexpensive marker and works good. They use a roller to put it on. The person doing the painting gets messy! It's a big enough patch to easily identify what cow has been ridden whether the paint is worn off or the hair is messed up.

I see a lot of talk on loose mineral. I do put out mineral tubs and I think it helps a lot. The problem I see is that I always see the same old cows on them every time I check on the tubs. I just wonder if the younger cows get their chance at them. Maybe they do. Once my cows turn 3 they are in the herd and don't get any special treatment. I just think there are cows that get more than their share and many that don't get enough. That was my thinking in starting to use the multi min.

Interesting to see the multimin product brought up as I received a flyer in the mail and read it with interest tried calling the number, left a message then called my vet for his thoughts on the product. He said he has sseveral clients using it. I am going to try it this year on new born and branding time shots, and cows in the fall. I would be interested in others thoughts that are using the product.

James,

I'm in a very Selenium deficient area. We have always given calves Bo-Se. I like that Multimin has some things beyond the Selenium

Multimin gives a boost of Minerals. Only the specific ones. I'm not certain how long it lasts in the tissue as residue. But without a base level of Minerals, you'd have to give it pretty frequently.

We have country where you just aren't going to get minerals fed well. Multimin is a nice boost coming off those spots

Make sure you have plenty of tubs out or the 'boss cows' will hog the mineral. Loose mineral is the best way to feed mineral. The mineral doesn't stay spread out consistently in lick tubs; and mineral blocks....the cattle will stop licking before they get their daily requirement. Loose mineral should be fed at the rate of 1 tub at least, per 50 head.

Multimin really doesn't contain many vitamins and mineral.
Read the label. I don't think it hurts, but don't depend just on it. Just a little
FWIW. I wish you good luck in your AI program. IMHO I think you'll really like the Black Cedar calves.
