Great pix!

Is she a hereford?

How come she didn't prolapse? :???:

Juan particular guy might not appreciate your joke, Jinglebob. But I do. :-)

Jersey, looks like calves are born about the same way in Texas that they are in Nebraska. They look like they're taking a dive off the high board.

Yeap she's hereford, bred to a black brangus bull.......In 15 years we've only had one that partially prolapsed (caught it before it got bad). And that was last fall, and she wasn't a hereford, she was an older brangus on about her 9th calf. :???:

Shoot Jersy, I was just teasin' you!

I know ya was Jinglebob.....I"m not real fond of herefords myself, Not that we've ever had any real problems with the one's we do have, but I just like black cattle more better :D

I followed her on foot, because my "new starter" on the toyota has issues, after bout givin it up when she crossed that slough, I'd beat and banged on the starter with a pair of fencin pliers numerous times. Mr Lilly was hookin up the rake to one tractor and the baler to the other, he finally started out across the pasture to my rescue.....when it started....I didnt even wait to explain to him what I was doin, just took off around to the other side so I could see better. We sat and watched till he sucked and then laid down for a nap. What a way to spend the afternoon...sittin under a shade tree.....watchin mother nature at work.

Nope LOL, when I noticed that she was startin to prolapse it was just startin to turn wrong side out. Penned her and poked what was startin to come out, back inside, and sewed her shut. Nother couple weeks, she had the calf fine, and didn't have any more problems. Hope I don't ever hafta experience a "bad" one. I've seen em in neighbor cows...and helped...but I hope my luck runs true, and it don't happen to none of ours like that.....that there's a big job to tackle.

We discussed taggin him. I don't like to tag on the first day. Yes it's a lot easier, they can't run away. Over they years we've tagged when brand spankin new and had several cows that flat refused to have anything to do with that calf after it was tagged (ended up tryin to get mama to take it, or bottle fed em). So we wait until the next day to go out and put a tag in. Don't always get to, since they can usually run like a deer by the next day. The one's we miss, will get a tag when they are worked in the pens. I keep records of what the cow has, then when they are turned back out I'll go sit and match up mama's to babies.

awesome pics! when I first looked at em i thot something was missin tho.... then it came to me.... whers the snow? ya mean cows can calve on green grass too??? wohd thunk it?

yeah...how unfair is that!! I think our cows would much rather drop onto nice, warm green grass than the cold snow!!
Absolutely beautiful pix and a great looking baby, there, Jersey!! Thanks for sharing!!!! :D :D :D

I'm just amazed she kept right on calving while you were there watching. Around here, if our cows know they're being watched, they'll wait and wait till we leave them alone. Unless it's a heifer which doesn't know any better!

Even though I've seen lots of calves born, it still enthralls me. Had to laugh at the guy who runs the local cafe, though. He's calving his mom's cows this year, has never done it before. The other day he had to pull one with the help of his mom's neighbour. Was he ever pumped when he came over to our table to tell us about it! Every detail about it was imprinted in his brain and it all came out in his story. He was so excited, he probably still hasn't come down to earth yet. Earned himself a new nickname....... Poppa Quinton-cow whisperer.

My 18 year old got to pull his first ON HIS OWN about a month back and came running into the house about 3 a.m. ---hollering and hooting to wake the dead---just to tell us all about it!! Said the calf really did not need the help, he just got tired of waiting and wanted to know what it was like!! :D

Love the Poppa Quinton-cow whisperer tag!!!

That's good theory Lilly, hands off till they get a chance to mother up, unless there is a problem,my prolapsed cow was really getting antsy this morning lotsa sign so I cut her stiches and turned her loose,IM betting she calves before she prolapses again,we will see what mama nature has to say now she is on her own..............good luck

Shelly,
I'm out there on a daily basis, either drivin thru em or parked somewhere sittin in the back of the truck watchin. Several will come up to the truck for a scratch behind the ear. All will come runnin if I honk the horn. In the third picture where she's lickin it clean, in the right corner of the photo you can see my truck tire. That's how close I was then. She did do some walkin away from me when I was on foot, but I just kept following, not real close but no more than 20 yards away. I probably never would have gotten outta the truck and followed had it not been for the starter not wantin to work. LOL

I also noticed somethin, the whole time she was "in the process" she did that "low talkin to baby, moo" and wondered if she was really talkin to it?
So that when it did get here, it'd know it was mama. I never knew they did that. Or maybe it was just her???
And a bunch of the heifers we kept as replacement kept comin up and checkin out what was goin on. They sure was interested.
