What a State Legislator Thinks about Hunters

These comments are by Betty Olson, a legislator from Prairie City, in response to a comment by a hunter on a rancher website.

"The bars are the only ones seeing much jump in business... and a lot of those guys go hunting while still under the influence. Most of the vandalism is done during hunting season while the national forest and the national grasslands are full of east river hunters, shooting at both game and each other and an occasional horse or cow. You guys are a class act!!! "

She also has some other strange ideas....

"Yes, I have a better idea what to do with any extra money GF&P raises – put it into the general fund to pay the owners of the game you're shooting. After all, the game belongs to the public and they have more right to that money than the folks we have hired to "manage" the public's game.

And as for being like Texas with very little public land? Sounds like a great idea to me."

Or this...

"Where did you get the idea we're trying to totally wipe out any species? Have you been listening to the urban liberal media? No person or organization I know of has been lobbying for the eradication of any species. All we are trying to do is protect our livestock and our livelihood from predators, pests and environmentalists. "



And, she's also an expert on predators.....

"All the predators we have now were here when this country was first settled, however good managers (and good shots) eradicated the wolf, mountain lion, eagle and bear. All we had to deal with were coyotes and fox until the government and the environmental whackos like the Center for Biological Diversity stepped in. Now all the predators we had gotten rid of are back and no rancher I know thinks that our lives have been improved because of it."

Seriously, I have a hard time believing even Betty Olson can be in favor of shooting eagles....but, those are her words, not mine.

She definatly does say it how she sees it, and i commend her for sticking up for what she feels, but i thank the good lord above there are not more with the same way of thinking at the capitol.

I prefer people who dont advocate the breaking of any laws.

I read the above that she is advocating the shooting of Eagles which is against the law. Even though good managers and good shooters like Betty werent able to keep the Eagle from comming back from near extinction and now is off the Endangered Species list.

I have never said I think I deserve to hunt on any persons private property, I do beleive in the public owning land and I beleive in road hunting, and yes I do beleive in free hunting but if that is something you do not choose to do it is your perocative, just dont try to stop me from doing it where I can .

Exactly, you read, but she has not advocated breaking the law at all.


Game Fish and Parks is the only one stopping you from hunting for free.

I just get a kick out of the idea that all of South Dakota's problems, (hunting, fishing, funding, anything) is always the "east river" mans fault. I didn't know that a simple river could seperate so much.

No defense because road hunting is just a way to get around private property and being able to say no, but road hunting in SD is only allowed for bird hunters. It is a real handy way to get in a wreck though with all the dipsticks driving 10 mph down the main road watching the ditch, going over hills in the middle and stopping whenever they see something so they can throw the doors open and bail out both sides.
A few years ago I popped over a hill and there was a Suburban 10 feet over the hill with all 4 doors open and people(some were kids) and dogs in both ditches. I hope I scared them half as bad as I scared myself when I went through the ditch sideways at 60 mph missing everything. More likely they were mad at me for being an Ahole because that is the way road hunters think.

Road hunting is sporting. Its a way (legal i may add) that i can up and go hunting any time at any spur of the moment and hunt. Im sure its illegal to road hunt in MN because of what a backasswards state it is, however, if done right, road hunting is very very productive and very ethical. My son and i hunt road ditches often, most cases we drive till we see a nice ditch with good cover. One gets out and walks while the other drives up to where the cover ends or an approach or whatever. Very productive for 1 or 2 people. You cant cover much more area with only 1 or 2 guys. There are times a rooster runs across the road and we get out and shoot the thing, i will tell ya, and its LEGAL!

I will tell ya this and its the absolute truth. THere are by far more landowners that break the law shooting big game from the road than the average joe hunter. I have seen it and i know it for a fact. They feel that since its their land, they can do whatever they want, including shooting from the truck, from the road and whatever. I have SEEN with my own eyes, landowners chasing deer with their trucks, 60mph threw corn fields, pastures and so on, so dont go telling me all the illegal crap is done from joe east river hunter because that is so far from the truth its not even funny. I would bet you the deer killed in your pasture was from a neighbor, neighbors kid or someone you know denny.

Spoken like a true public hunter, its never a public hunters fault it is always the big bad land owners fault. As other people have said road hunting is the lazy mans way to hunt, and is more trouble than it is worth.
