Finally found some firm common ground with you Kola. Stars are the key. 3 or more.

Why only get three stars when you just have to step out of your trailer on a warm summer night, look up,and have a million of them.....

Got all of that every night at the ranch. If I am going to move closer to the neighbors (camping) I would rather have service and not have to pull a cumbersome unit down the road. Been down that canoe trip and have out grown the hassle. Don't get me wrong, every one views it differently.

I hear ya there too...pampering ones self a couple times a year is a earned right I figure..... :D

Have had a 5th wheel for 10 yrs..next one will be a bumper pull ..only because i am tired of installing the 5th wheel hitch every two or 3 years when i trade trucks..One thing about bumper pulls is they will back up easier then a 5th wheel.I am even thinking of a second hand motor home..the bumper pulls have gottin a lot nicer in the last few yrs too..

We take the hitch out of truck every yr....BIG pain in butt. Greg waits until son or SIL's here to help put it back in. I actually would rather have a motor home. We go to a lot of rodeos in the summer and would be nice just to pile in that and take home with us.As it is now our fifth wheel has bunk beds and can sleep 8,it was bought so we could take the girls and grandkids with us when the "boys" are working. :)

You need to have Greg upgrade his hitch most of the new ones remove quickly with a few pins and clips.

We put a 2 5/16 gooseneck coupler on ours that way we can use the ball for the other trailers. That way I don't need to switch anything and any truck will work.

We are finding out that the hookup we use for the Featherlite and other
ranch type trailers isn't what to use with a 5th wheel RV trailer with
a bed slider. A B-W is what they recommend. They said the hitch we
have might make stress cracks in the fiberglass. Some will crack and
some won't but to be safe, we need the other type of hitch.

So what about that? Denny? What's your opinion?

Mine is'nt cracking but I don't pull it more that 500 miles a year now it has been to california and Florida so it's had some use. My inlaws pull theirs all over plus go to Alabama each winter and they are'nt seeing any troubles. Those guy's who sell campers make as much installing a hitch as they do on the camper would be my guess. I remember what they wanted and I passed on the deal.

Both campers are 10 years old or older so if you look at it that way will you own it that long? I think sitting outdoors is harder on them than what hitch they are pulled with.

FH when you look at the trailers/5th wheels, etc. I would see how all the beds make down, we stayed in a friends 5 th wheel and when the pull out couch was made into a bed for the night, you couldn't walk thru to the kitchen..pain in the butt!

Thanks Yanuck. We've been looking and think we found what we want.
It's new of course...but had the electric jacks both front and rear. It
has a lower profile but still has the bed slider so I can get around the
main bed to make it up. Some of those that don't have the bed
slider, I can't make the bed...just as Jersey Lilly said.

Thanks for the tips everyone. It really helped. Keep 'em coming.

Don't have a camper but see more and more of the 5th wheels down in this area converted from 5th wheel to a gooseneck type hookup like a livestock trailer.

One of my traveling goals is to someday drive from the Sandhills of Nebraska to the wilds of Alaska. If this ever happens, I don't want to have any schedule, but just drive a ways on some days and not make much progress at all on others. If it takes all summer, that would be fine. I've thought that if this ever happens, my vehicle of choice would be a one-ton crew-cab pickup with a camper. Travel fairly light, and spend most nights in motel rooms. If you couldn't find a room, the camper would be available.

Just lately I've seen two nice outfits that would qualify for my expectations.

An even better one, because it is a one ton instead of a 3/4 ton outfit. Also it has a bigger back seat.

The money saved in not buying a big over-sized fifth wheel trailer and the extra gas required to drag it around could be enjoyed being spent on motel rooms. Just my thoughts, for whatever they're worth.

The first time you are takin a snooze up in the neckover part of that camper, and, momentarily you forget your not sleepin in your bed at home, you wake suddenly and sit up(more like halfway sit up) and bang your head on the roof.....you'll wish you'd stayed in a motel or had a bigger camper that had more head room. But on the upside...its probably not gonna be metal like our first horse trailer was. Holy cow that hurt so bad!!!!!!! And I did it on one of the supports that goes across the top that's square tubin. I bout cried!!!

My Dad borrowed our 29' bumper pull and 1 ton to do the trip to Alaska. Broke the hitch of the trailer right off at Laird Falls. I would like to do the trip one way and switch with another one way-er and take a cruise ship down to Vancouver. One drive and one float.

That's how we want to do Alaska too. Apparently that is a option, you can rent a trailer or motorhome. My BF looked into it and I think we're doing that trip next summer.

I was thinking more along the lines of buying a unit with another couple and meeting them in Alaska for the trade and selling it when we got home.
