Is that up on the hill at Cochrane?

Nice story about the King bros. :D
It is half way up on the north side the 1 a and east off of Hwy 22. The driveway in takes you back down toward the ravine. On the northwest side of town.

Thanks Per. I haven't been there for a few years now. Its just like going home. Thanks for posting those pics. Makes me miss Cochrane even more now. King brothers were quite the pair. I have friends in the Porcupine hills that knew the King brothers well. :D

Your welcome Jigger Boss, my Dad knew them. One of my friends owns a good portion of their ranch. We need to know this history of those that pioneered the way for us.

Per, I am re-reading a book now called The Complete Rancher by Russell H. Bennett. It was written in 1946, fourth printing in 1965. he owned the Shoderee Ranch at the time. Did you or your family know him?
A lot of the problems then are still problems today. History does repeat itself.

Shoderee had a dispersal in September. Not sure what is happening now. My Dad knew the Gallisters as well. Not familiar with RH Bennett though. The book sounds interesting, I may look it up.

I didn't think Bennett was the name connected with Shoderee as of today but that is what the author called his place and it is in the right general area.

My Grandfather wrote that book. I'm not certain about current events at the ranch but it's located south of Pincher Creek, Alberta and the name was cobbled together from the name of a settler named Reed who lived on the place when my Russell Bennett bought it back in the 1930's.

Russell Bennett was very concerned about proper range management and understood early on the value of keeping the pastures free from overgrazing. It took over 20 years of light grazing to restore the natural grasses in one pasture he acquired. He published another article on the subject in 1956 (http://www.jstor.org/pss/3894247).

My father sold the place to the Gallisters in the early 1990's. He never regretted this business decision as the cattle business has been a tough row to how since. Beautiful country that's easy to love and hard to miss. My grandfather was guided through the area by Bert Riggall after WWI.

I am in the trade now as a wholesaler and am buying the offals from the animals in your herds after they've been processed through the packing plants. I'm still looking for interested sellers.

Thanks for the input Shodman and welcome to the board. The book I have was left to me by my Dad who I lost 5 years ago. The first time I read it would have been when I was about 15, my sister found it in a box of other stuff that she hadn't gone through until then. It is in very good condition.
I am finding it a more interesting read nearly 35 years later than the first time.

I just finished reading the Compleat Rancher and was curious if anyone has any pictures of the country Russell was talking about. He was my great grandfather and I've always heard stories from my mom about spending summers up there, but never tallied it up to much more than mom's stories. Now I'm finding some curiosity in the history and just poking around for photos of the place he wrote about.

Shodman - can you tell me the year your grandfather died? I am compiling a history of a company he was chairman of, Placer Development, and can't find that info. Thanks.
