As for guys praying for a rain to cover up lazy grass management-they seem to think whining will grow grass too-we went through ten years of straight drought here-wouldn't of done it without all those bothersome crossfences lol. Saved our cowherd-lots of guys didn't. If op[enin g a gate every couple days is too much work for anybody-I'm surprised they can breath on their own without help lol. I'm as lazy as they come and even I can manage to get that done.

"An expert is someone who is a hundred miles away from home."

You have the advantage of being at least a hundred miles away from anybody else's home, so you always get to be the expert.

I don't think any of us were whining any more about our lack of rain than you were last winter from a lack of snow and cold weather. Cattle were falling into your stock pond and perishing because of the weather conditions.

We all have our trials and tribulations, and you don't have any corner on the market for either troubles or brilliance. I do take my hat off to you for surviving and ranching that close to the Arctic Circle.

Back to my statement, "An extra inch of rain takes the place of a whole lot of management," think about it, it's the truth. I believe in pasture rotation, but in moderation. Several times a summer is fine, but I don't want to have to do it every two days. As for grass management, come down and visit someday. I'd put our grass conditions on this ranch up against about anybody's. Putting cattle out with neighbors for the summer is expensive, but it sure allows the home ranch to accumulate extra grass, and go into the winter in prime condition.

Good to hear it went well. We have seeded grass a lot of different ways and it always seems to come as long as its not put in too deep and if we do use a nurse crop, we cut it early and get it off as as silage so there are no swaths to choke it out. Trying to make greenfeed combined with a bit of rain can make a real mess.

I am sure this isn't new to you but maybe for some on this site.
