Well I finally am back been out gathering the herd for a while. But this is something that I am so d--- mad about I might be in the big house before it is all said and done. We run our cow out on some BLM ground in sw Utah I was out there last week gathering cows and calves till it snow so hard that we could not get the bull wagon into the corral so I had to turn them out again. Went back last Thursday to finish up and to my amazement I had a whole bunch of cows running around with tight bags. I couldnt figure out what was going on till I came across a herd didnt have a calf one and four of the cows where in the corral the week before with calves. So I called the local law and brand inspector out there to tell them that I am have calves stolen and they tell me that I am not alone that all the cow calf producers that run out there are having the same problem. They then told me that the russlers are driving out on the premits and shoting the young calves and taking them back to their homes and butchering them. I lost 25 calves out of 146 on that premit. I just hope the law finds them before I do. By the way Leaning H this premit is down in your neck of the woods so watch out.

Sorry for your losses, it's tough enough to make a living with mother nature for a partner, sure don't need any 'silent' partners.
I think the opportunistic shootings happen more than we realize. I pasture at the end of a 15 mile trail through crown (public) land. I've never lost animals on the scale you're talking but have occasionally lost one without a trace, never the skinny poor eatin' type.
Hate to racial profile but I believe I sometimes pay the price for a "dry run" by our early setlers.

Similar problems down here, except they won't even take them home to do a decent job of it. Just hack off the the four legs and leave everything else to rot right there in your own pasture.

Probably will start seeing more of this as the econamy continues to slide and folks get desperate to feed their own.

Sad part is, a person almost hopes they don't catch them in the act 'cause prison most likely isn't worth the price to pay for what they deserve.

Is the punishment for cattle wrestling still death by hanging in your state .

That is an abomination, I am so very sorry this has happened to you.

Nope but we have hung a few team ropers!  Rustling is plain old theft and with the numbers Cure is talking about it will definately be a felony!

This really isn't funny, but I did a double take when I read HD's
'cattle wrestling instead of cattle rustling.

I hope you don't take offense, HD. It just was funny to me that
you'd get hung for cattle wrestling...
that would ruin a lot of brandings...
